Exchange Program Offered Full Year, Fall/Winter, or Spring (April-July)
A school of about 6000 students, Iwate University, founded in 1949, consists of four faculties: humanities and social sciences, education, engineering, and agriculture. NCC students are eligible to register for three different programs at Iwate University: The Japanese Language and Cultural Studies program, the ISSI program (International Short-Stay Studies in Iwate) or the Faculty of Education program.
This exchange opportunity, initially designed for students in education, takes full advantage of the resources in the faculty of education, which has its own affiliated kindergarten, elementary school, and junior high. An intensive course in "Special Education in Japan," as well as at least 15 others are available in English; students will also gain experience in Japanese classrooms. Morioka, capital city of Iwate Prefecture, is known as the "town of forests and hills," located under three hours by bullet train from Tokyo, in an area know for its beautiful landscapes and recreational opportunities.
NCC Eligibility Requirements:
Junior or Senior standing. GPA 3.0 preferred; minimum two years of Japanese.
NCC Academic Credit:
Students usually earn between 9-12 NCC credits per term.
Housing and Meals:
Accommodation: approximately 10,000-15,000 yen/month
Meals: approximately 20,000 to 30,000 yen/month
Other Iwate University Estimated Costs:
Students pay tuition and fees to NCC; room and board to Iwate University.
Financial aid is applicable to this program, however, all study abroad students should meet with a financial aid representative during the spring term to determine any changes/adjustments in their financial aid package.
Textbooks and Transportation: approximately 10,000 yen/month
This really depends on the student. Students need to consider all personal spending money including travel! The host institution estimates about 20,000 yen/month.
