Nine faculty receive tenure, promotions

The North Central College Board of Trustees grants tenure, approves promotions to faculty members effective with the start of the 2014-2015 academic year.

At its May 2014 meeting, the North Central College Board of Trustees granted tenure and approved promotions to several faculty members effective with the start of the 2014-2015 academic year in September. These faculty are:

Diane Anstine, Ph.D., was promoted to professor of economics

Michael de Brauw, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of classics

Shereen Ilahi, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of history

Wendy Koenig, Ph.D., was granted tenure

North Central College recognized Ian Wright as the Outstanding Senior Man and Christina Richardson as the Outstanding Senior Woman for 2014 during the College’s annual Honors Convocation on May 13.

The annual awards recognize one senior man and one senior woman for their successes in the classroom, their involvement and contributions to the campus community outside the classroom, and their future potential.

Undergraduate and graduate students attending any college or university can enroll in summer credit courses at North Central College.

Registration is underway for a variety of undergraduate and graduate-level courses that often can be applied toward graduation requirements at a student’s home institution. Class sessions are offered in four- and eight-week terms, starting June 16. The second four-week term starts July 14.

A record 33 North Central students help citizens with their tax returns

North Central College accounting majors are IRS-certified volunteers, providing free assistance and filing of tax returns for people who need help.

UPDATE April 15, 2014: Accounting majors who served as IRS-certified volunteers this tax season processed 584 returns, plus 25 prior year returns, and secured $850,000 in federal refunds and $90,000 in state refunds for people they helped. This was an increase of 45% over last year’s total returns. Awesome job!

North Central College’s Circle K service club has been awarded a national grant to fund a community service project that will benefit children with cancer.

North Central College’s student-run Circle K International service club has been awarded a grant by the global Circle K International organization to finance a community service project that will provide care packages to children with cancer.

Sarah Lureau, North Central College assistant professor of accounting, chaired and coordinated the Illinois Accounting Teachers Conference (ILATC), held Sept. 27-28 and hosted by North Central College.

Some 75 faculty members from various colleges and universities across Illinois attended the conference, which offered 10 sessions and 10.5 continuing professional education credits for certified public accountants. The conference theme was based on “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow of Accounting Education.”

North Central College began the 2013-2014 academic year Sept. 16 with a record number of students.

Total enrollment stands at 3,048 undergraduate and graduate students, eclipsing the 3,000 mark for the second straight year. The College welcomed 852 new full-time undergraduate students. Enrollment this fall includes a record number of international students and increased representation of out-of-state students and veterans.

Lureau passes exam, meets requirements as Certified Fraud Examiner

Sarah Lureau, North Central College assistant professor of accounting, was approved as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) by the Certification Committee for the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) on Sept. 6.

The CFE credential, considered the gold standard in the area of fraud and one of today’s most marketable credentials, signifies proven expertise in fraud examination. This certification by Lureau has created a distinctive qualification within North Central’s accounting department.
