Caroline (Callie) Clay '13, an anthropology major from Dixon and Alex Pirela '13, a social science and history major from West Chicago, are working under the supervision of Gloria Levitt '03, associate registrar in The Field Museum’s Department of Anthropology.

Emily Rademaker of Cary was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in German and Outstanding Service to Student Life awards at North Central College.

Emily “Em” Rademaker of Cary, Ill., was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in German Award and Outstanding Service to Student Life Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Rademaker is a senior majoring in German, classical civilization and sociology with minors in history and anthropology at North Central College. After graduation, she will serve in the Republic of South Africa for a 27-month assignment with the Peace Corps. She is the daughter of Dana and Linnea Rademaker and is a 2008 graduate of Cary-Grove Community High School.

May 15, 2012—If you want to succeed at scientific research, you’ve got to be able to work well with others.

That was the advice North Central College students and others heard May 15 during the keynote address at the College’s 15th annual Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research from professor, pharmaceutical researcher and North Central alumna Heather Carlson ’91.

SIFE named regional champion, qualifies for nationals

North Central College’s SIFE team is named regional champion and qualifies to compete at nationals after presenting projects to business leaders.

After participating in the SIFE Regional Competition in Chicago on April 16, North Central College’s SIFE team was named a regional champion and qualified to compete in the SIFE USA National Exposition May 22-24 in Kansas City. Some 65 teams competed at the Chicago regional event.

Field Museum internship leads to scholarship for North Central College anthropology major

North Central College anthropology major Jessica Pantel of Beach Park, Ill., has been awarded the College’s 2012 Gloria Levitt Scholarship for Anthropology.

May 8, 2012—North Central College anthropology major Jessica Pantel of Beach Park, Ill., has been awarded the College’s 2012 Gloria Levitt Scholarship for Anthropology.

Pantel, a junior, interned with The Field Museum in Chicago during winter term and was awarded the $1,000 scholarship for her work with the museum. The award was announced May 1 when Gloria Levitt, associate registrar in The Field Museum’s Department of Anthropology, hosted a talk at North Central about career opportunities in sociology and anthropology.

Matthew Krystal, North Central College assistant professor of anthropology, publishes cross-cultural work on dance, “Indigenous Dance and Dancing Indian.”

Matthew Krystal, North Central College assistant professor of anthropology, had his book, titled “Indigenous Dance and Dancing Indian,” published by University Press of Colorado in September 2011. The 360-page work is a cross-cultural, cross-ethnic and cross-national comparison of indigenous dance practices.

Record 45 North Central students to present at NCUR

For third straight year, a record number of students will represent North Central College at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR).

For the third consecutive year, a record number of students from North Central College will participate in the nation’s leading conference on undergraduate research.

Forty-five students will represent North Central at the annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) March 29-31 at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. No other college or university in Illinois will send more students to this prestigious conference.
