North Central College faculty and alumni featured in art exhibit Jan. 13 - March 4

Multimedia artwork by North Central College faculty and alumni will be featured in the exhibit “Vantage Point” Jan. 13 through March 4.

The exhibit highlights the works of alumni who were students of Associate Professor of Art Barry Skurkis, whose own artwork also is featured in the display.

Phillip knew from his first practicum experience that he wanted to become an art teacher. “I knew in that middle school classroom I had made the right choice for my career. North Central’s comprehensive education program allowed me to not only observe, but instruct at every level before student teaching. These practicums were so valuable to my development as an educator.”

Philip also found North Central’s new facilities posed the perfect environment to enhance his own artistic skills and exhibit his work. “Meiley-Swallow Hall the Fine Arts Center are very creative environments. I spent countless days and nights within the studio walls, creating the finest artwork of my life.”

Looking back on his four years, Philip says, “North Central gave me lots of great memories and the chance to develop lasting relationships. The smaller classes provide a comfortable environment and the professors know who you are and care how you’re doing.”

North Central College presents “In the Absence of Color,” an exhibit of silver-based black and white photography by alumnus Jon Balke Nov. 20-Jan. 5.

Silver-based black and white photographs by artist and North Central College alumnus Jon W. Balke will be on display Nov. 20 through Jan. 5 in an exhibit titled “In the Absence of Color.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public in the College’s Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St., Naperville. An artist reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, where guests can meet Balke and discuss his work. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

D-Term Verandah courses offer experiential learning

North Central College offers a record 17 Verandah experiences during D-Term, including four for first-year students only. Register on Merlin; space is limited.

During 2011 D-Term, North Central College is offering a record number of Verandah course offerings for students. These experiential learning opportunities connect faculty and students in informal environments outside the classroom around topics of interest.

Nov. 4, 2011—Works by 20 art teachers in Naperville Community Unit School District 203 are featured in an exhibit at North Central College.

The “District 203 Faculty Art Show” opens Nov. 4 and runs through Jan. 5 in North Central’s Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery, 31 S. Ellsworth St., Naperville. Artists will greet visitors during an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Josh Stumpenhorst ’03 wins Illinois Teacher of the Year.

Josh Stumpenhorst ’03 gets to go to NASA Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. He’ll also get to meet President Obama and the first lady at a White House dinner in the spring. He may even be invited to throw out the first pitch at a Cubs game.

Those are some of the perks that come with being named the Illinois Teacher of the Year for 2011-2012. The Illinois State Board of Education announced the award Oct. 22 during the Those Who Excel banquet in Normal.

North Central College alumnus Josh Stumpenhorst named Illinois Teacher of the Year

The Illinois State Board of Education has named North Central alumnus Josh Stumpenhorst recipient of the 2011-2012 Illinois Teacher of the Year Award.

Oct. 24, 2011—North Central College alumnus Josh Stumpenhorst is the 2011-2012 Illinois Teacher of the Year.

Stumpenhorst earned his undergraduate degree in social science and secondary education at North Central College. He teaches language arts and social science to sixth-graders at Lincoln Junior High School in Naperville Community Unit School District 203. He credits his experience at North Central for helping him achieve success as an educator.

Titled “Metropolitan Chaos,” the free exhibit will be on display in North Central’s Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery, 31 S. Ellsworth St., Naperville. Burns will greet visitors during a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12. Complimentary refreshments will be served.
