North Central College invites the public to a free presentation Nov. 2 on the benefits of learning the Chinese language.

The presentation, “Why Chinese?” will feature three guest speakers who speak fluent Chinese and who are Chicago-area managers of international business operations. The presentation will be particularly beneficial to high school and college-aged students considering Chinese studies, and for adults considering learning to use Chinese in their careers.

The College’s East Asian studies program will host the seventh annual Midwest Conference on Chinese Thought, May 6-7. The free, two-day conference seeks to foster dialogue and interaction among scholars and students and will feature Michael Puett, professor of Chinese history at Harvard University, in a keynote address at 4:30 Saturday, May 7. The title of his talk is “Ancestors, Fathers and Sons: Ritual Theory and Philosophy in Early China.”

Life in Japan is gradually returning to normal for North Central College student Ereka Funkhouser.

Funkhouser—a junior majoring in Japanese and classical civilization—studies at Iwate University in Morioka, a town of about 300,000 located in the Iwate Prefecture. She was shaken by the March 11 earthquake, but her school 40 miles from the coast was not directly impacted by the devastating tsunami.

Record number of students to present at national research conference

A record 38 students from various academic areas will represent North Central at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research this spring.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Jan. 31, 2011)—For the second year, a record number of North Central College students have been chosen to participate in the nation’s leading conference on undergraduate research.

China's Consul General to Chicago to speak April 7

North Central College welcomes Huang Ping, the Consul General of China to Chicago, to speak on its Naperville campus Wednesday, April 7.

North Central College welcomes Mr. Huang Ping, the Consul General of the People's Republic of China to Chicago, to speak on its Naperville campus Wednesday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the College's Koten Chapel at Kiekhofer Hall, 329 E. School St.

He will discuss the state of China today. His talk is free and open to the public.
