North Central College students may apply by Feb. 20 to present their original research at the College’s 16th annual Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research, which will take place during Honors Day on Tuesday, May 14.

Information about the symposium and how to submit proposals may be found on the College’s website. A list of frequently asked questions also is available.

John Petzke M ’98

John Petzke M ’98 was appointed chief technology officer of North Shore School District 112. He previously served as the executive director of technology for Oswego Community Unit School District 308. Petzke’s position combines the duties of director of information and media services and the learning coordinator for technology integration, which were previously two full-time positions at School District 112. He received a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Aurora University and a master’s degree in educational administration from North Central College.

Helen Goren Shafton M ’05

Helen Goren Shafton M ’05 released the Second Edition of “A Curriculum for Special Education Art,” a guide to teaching art to children with disabilities in the classroom and other settings. It includes illustrated lessons with step-by-step instructions, written for teachers and parents. Shafton has been working with students with a variety of cognitive and motor disabilities in her art room for more than 13 years.

North Central alumna Karen Popovich named 2012 Illinois Art Educator of the Year

The Illinois Art Education Association has named North Central College alumna Karen Popovich the 2012 Illinois Art Educator of the Year.

The Illinois Art Education Association (IAEA) has named North Central College alumna Karen Popovich the 2012 Illinois Art Educator of the Year.

Popovich, of Aurora, teaches at Indian Prairie School District 204’s Metea Valley High School in Aurora. She earned her bachelor’s degree in studio art from North Central College in 1996.

The annual award recognizes the exemplary contributions, service and achievements of an outstanding IAEA member. The award will be presented at the IAEA conference in Lisle on Nov. 2.

North Central College will present the documentary, “Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall. A faculty and student discussion, with audience participation, will follow the free event.

North Central College ranks among the top 15 percent of private, nonprofit schools in the 2011-2012 survey by Payscale.com. The mid-career median salary for North Central College graduates is $81,300, ranking No. 39 out of 303 schools in the private, nonprofit category.

Mark Myers '01

Mark Myers, choral director at Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, IL, has been honored with a Vocal Vanguard award, a 2012 Aspire Award sponsored by FAME, a national show choir competition. The award was based on the number of online nominations Myers received from fellow members of the Academy of Show Choir Professionals around the country.
