North Central College is offering three new options in its Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) degree.

Feb. 8, 2012—North Central College is offering three new options in its Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) degree.

The College is incorporating three different programs to allow MALS students to pursue a specialty that suits their professional and personal interests. 16 North Central student broadcasters earn nominations in national competition

Sixteen North Central College broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1 have earned 12 nominations in an annual national competition.

Feb. 7, 2012—Sixteen North Central College broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1, the College’s student-run radio station, have earned 12 nominations in an annual national competition sponsored by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS).

Winners of the Golden Microphone Trophy Awards will be announced March 2-4 at the 72nd Annual IBS International Radio/Webcast Conference in New York City. Last year, North Central students brought home first-place awards for Best Sports Play-by-Play and Best Documentary at the 2011 IBS awards.

Self-Employment in the Arts Conference Feb. 24-25 helps careers of aspiring artists

College and high school students, educators and adults who aspire to be self-employed artists will gain valuable information about running their own businesses as artists Feb. 24-25, 2012 when North Central College hosts the 12th annual Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference.

Both events begin at 7 p.m. in the College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. During a transfer visit day at North Central College, Kira realized she found the right place to finish her degree. “I remember experiencing the college tour, but the standout part of the day was talking to knowledgeable people from the different departments and offices. I was so impressed when I met with the financial aid representative because I felt other schools weren’t interested in helping a nontraditional student like me afford a quality education.”

Other factors for choosing North Central were location, liberal arts curriculum and knowledgeable faculty. “The school had an amazing reputation and cared about each of the students.”

Kira developed strong relationships with many English professors. “I knew I could talk to any of them at any time, and they were always helpful and available. I couldn’t have made it through without their support. But now, here I am, the first person in my immediate family to get a bachelor’s degree and I’m so grateful.”

Iowa newspaper profiles English professor, novelist

A daily newspaper talks to Zachary Michael Jack, assistant professor of English, about his family's roots in Iowa and his latest novel.

The Daily Iowan, the newspaper of the University of Iowa, interviewed Jack about his new book, "Native Soulmate: A Season in Search of a Love Homegrown." Jack says it's part love story, part adventure story and an exploration of current issues that concern rural and small-town Iowa and the Midwest.

North Central College honors Peace Corps administrator with Outstanding Alumni Award

North Central College is honoring Esther Benjamin, associate director for global operations for the Peace Corps, with a 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award.

This is the second of five weekly installments profiling individuals who will receive Alumni Awards & Recognition on Nov. 11 during North Central College’s Sesquicentennial Homecoming Celebration.

Oct. 10, 2011—North Central College is honoring Esther Benjamin of Mitchellville, Md., with a 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award.

North Central alumna Kristine Book teaching children in South Korea

Kristine Book, a 2006 alumna of North Central College, is teaching communication skills to schoolchildren in South Korea.

The Sauk Valley News in Book’s hometown of Dixon, Ill., recently published an article about her experiences. She’s teaching six classes a day, Monday through Friday, she told the newspaper.
