North Central College students will discuss their scholarly work Aug. 1 during the poster session of the 2013 Summer Undergraduate Research Colloquium (SURC).

The SURC poster session takes place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 in Smith Hall of Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St. (The session previously was scheduled to take place in Heininger Auditorium at the Larrance Academic Center). Most of the 40 students who participated in the 2013 SURC will be present.

Kimberly Grazulis, daughter of Ellen Akerman and John Grazulis, of Lockport, Ill., received three awards—the Outstanding Major in English writing Award, the Outstanding Major in French Award, and the Outstanding Student the Arts and Letters Division Award—during Honors Day May 14 at North Central College.

A senior, Kimberly has a double major in English writing and in French at North Central College. She is a graduate of Lockport Township High School.

North Central College alumna Rachel Louise Snyder ’92 will give a talk on ethical issues in the “post-sweatshop” world at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, in Meiley-Swallow Hall. The free event is part of the College’s yearlong focus on global human rights.

English writing and French major participates in poetry festival

North Central College senior Kimberly Grazulis is chosen to read in Chicago’s 14th annual Citywide Undergraduate Poetry Festival.

North Central College student Kimberly Grazulis ’13 participated in the 14th annual Citywide Undergraduate Poetry Festival in Chicago.

The festival was held April 4 at Columbia College Chicago and featured the talents of eight poets from Chicago-area colleges and universities who read their own original works. Other participating institutions included DePaul University, Northwestern University and the University of Chicago.

Students learn how to advocate issues with legislators

North Central College students attend ecumenical advocacy conference, speak with congressional staff in nation’s capital about issues important to them.

Eight North Central College students traveled to Washington, D.C., to attend the Ecumenical Advocacy Days (EAD) 2013 National Gathering.

More than 700 people from across the country attended the April 5-8 gathering. The schedule of events included workshops that informed attendees of key issues in the global food system and how to effectively communicate with legislators.
