Journalism major Laurel White ’10 is named Lee Ester News Fellow at Wisconsin Public Radio, a position named for a College alumnus.

Laurel White ’10 always thought of herself as a “print” person, so she spent her years at North Central climbing the editorial ladder of the student-run newspaper, The Chronicle, and squeezing in a term as a DJ at WONC-FM 89.1.

The Princeton Review has once again named North Central College a Best Midwestern College in its annual survey of the nation’s best colleges.

Colleges of Distinction is a guide that considers the views of guidance counselors, educators and admission professionals to honor colleges that excel in four areas of undergraduate education: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes.

The 15th annual edition praises North Central College and its commitment to those four core values.

Heather grew up playing Scrabble and reading books with her mother. She formed a passion for literature that transformed into a potential career.

“English was the only major that fit my brain and creative needs,” she says. “Writing’s my greatest interest, which I’ll continue practicing after graduation.”

Heather interned with Shelly Porcellino, North Central College’s director of grants. She gained hands-on experience with technical writing and practical research. She was co-editor of the North Central Review, the College’s literary magazine, where she learned about design, production and distribution.

Heather aspires to combine her creative and technical writing skills after graduation. With the practical skills she gained at North Central, her dream may come true.

“I want to work in an environment that allows me to combine my loves of art, writing and philanthropy,” she says.

Kelly Rasmussen earns Outstanding Major in English Award

Kelly Rasmussen was awarded the Outstanding Major in English Award during North Central College’s 2014 Honors Convocation.

Kelly Rasmussen, daughter of Lyle and Mimi Rasmussen of Rockton, Ill., was awarded the Outstanding Major in English Award during Honors Day May 13 at North Central College in Naperville.

A senior, Kelly is a double major in English: writing and Spanish at North Central College. She is a graduate of Hononegah Community High School.
