May 15, 2012—If you want to succeed at scientific research, you’ve got to be able to work well with others.

That was the advice North Central College students and others heard May 15 during the keynote address at the College’s 15th annual Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research from professor, pharmaceutical researcher and North Central alumna Heather Carlson ’91.

North Central College’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) joined forces with employee volunteers at Lowe’s Naperville home improvement retail store to create a self-sustaining, organic garden for immigrant residents associated with the nonprofit Emmanuel House CDC.

2012 Goldwater Scholar, Maria Gommel

Maria Gommel ’13 has been named a 2012 Goldwater Scholar, the highest national undergraduate award for achievement in math, science and engineering. Gommel is majoring in actuarial science and mathematics and intends to pursue a doctorate in mathematics after graduation.

World Water Day event taking place Tuesday at Kaufman Dining Hall

North Central College is participating in the Illinois World Water Day of Service during midday Tuesday at Kaufman Dining Hall.

North Central College is participating in the Illinois World Water Day of Service. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, in Kaufman Dining Hall, Sustainability Coordinator Brittany Graham and School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) will offer tips on water conservation. Prizes will be raffled.

Exhibit features artwork by three North Central College students through April 30

Artwork by three North Central College students is featured in the exhibit “No Common Cense” through April 30.

The exhibit is free, open to the public and on display in the Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery, 31 S. Ellsworth St. Students Jessica Brewster, Robin Gadient and Giuseppe Pellicano will greet visitors during an artists’ reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 13; complimentary refreshments will be served.

North Central hosts 2012 Blue Key National Conference

More than 100 students from across the country traveled to North Central College for the 2012 Blue Key National Conference, which took place Jan. 13-14.

The students represented 13 different colleges and universities, ranging from the University of Portland in Oregon to Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. Over the course of the conference, students had the opportunity to participate in a vast array of activities.

Alum talks to students about his work as senior advisor in EPA

North Central College alumnus Charlie Bartsch ’73 is senior program advisor for economic development at EPA, spends day talking with campus community.

Charlie Bartsch—a North Central College Class of 1973 alumnus and political science major—returned to campus Oct. 21 to give a lunchtime lecture to the campus community, speak to students in two classes, meet with sustainability team members and students in the Green Scene club.

North Central College’s chapter of the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) hosted a demonstration day as part of its National Chemistry Week activities Thursday, Oct. 20.

Students in SMACS and faculty advisor Paul Brandt (photo, left), professor of chemistry and chair of chemistry and physics, performed 12 different experiments for the event in front of a handful of North Central College students.
