Kate Lueders, a North Central College senior majoring in biology, is conducting research and performing field work in Oregon this summer as a Sea Grant Scholar.

June 26, 2012—Kate Lueders, a North Central College senior majoring in biology, is conducting research and performing field work in Oregon this summer as a Sea Grant Scholar.

Lueders is keeping a blog about her experience and writes that she arrived in the Pacific Northwest in mid-June to undergo orientation and safety training. Her work this summer involves the study of nutrient uptake in tidal wetlands.

Recycling/donation options during resident student move-out

Through June 8, North Central provides options for electronics and carpet recycling, furniture and food donations and more for students, faculty, staff.

As part of the resident student year-end move-out, North Central College is providing several options to students, faculty and staff to recycle unwanted, nonworking electronics and used carpet; donate furniture, clothing and food; collect medications; and dispose of household hazardous waste. These services are available on campus through Friday, June 8.

May 17, 2012—Andrea Hehn of Portland, Ore., was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Student in Interdisciplinary Studies Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Hehn is a senior pursuing an individualized major in environmental studies at North Central College. She is the daughter of Lyle and Carrie Hehn and is a 2008 graduate of U.S. Grant High School.

The College does not offer a major program in environmental studies, but students may declare an individualized major in programs not offered by the College.

That was the advice North Central College students and others heard May 15 during the keynote address at the College’s 15th annual Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research from professor, pharmaceutical researcher and North Central alumna Heather Carlson ’91.

North Central College’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) joined forces with employee volunteers at Lowe’s Naperville home improvement retail store to create a self-sustaining, organic garden for immigrant residents associated with the nonprofit Emmanuel House CDC.

2012 Goldwater Scholar, Maria Gommel

Maria Gommel ’13 has been named a 2012 Goldwater Scholar, the highest national undergraduate award for achievement in math, science and engineering. Gommel is majoring in actuarial science and mathematics and intends to pursue a doctorate in mathematics after graduation.

World Water Day event taking place Tuesday at Kaufman Dining Hall

North Central College is participating in the Illinois World Water Day of Service during midday Tuesday at Kaufman Dining Hall.

North Central College is participating in the Illinois World Water Day of Service. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, in Kaufman Dining Hall, Sustainability Coordinator Brittany Graham and School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) will offer tips on water conservation. Prizes will be raffled.
