Humanitarian Samantha Nutt, an authority on how war impacts civilians, will address honors students from across the nation Jan. 13 when North Central College hosts the 2012 Blue Key National Conference.

The Blue Key Honor Society recognizes college students at senior institutions of higher education for balanced and all-around excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. Nearly 120 students are expected to participate in the three-day national conference Jan. 13-15.

North Central College has named a historic Naperville property in honor of William and Mary Abe in appreciation for their generous support of the College.

The property at 48 E. Jefferson Ave. was named Abe (pronounced ah-bee) House during an unveiling ceremony Nov. 12. Bill Abe, a 1950 alumnus of North Central, and Mary (Bomberger)—a 1952 alumna of the College—attended the surprise unveiling with other family members.

The presentation, “Why Chinese?” will feature three guest speakers who speak fluent Chinese and who are Chicago-area managers of international business operations. The presentation will be particularly beneficial to high school and college-aged students considering Chinese studies, and for adults considering learning to use Chinese in their careers.

North Central College honors Peace Corps administrator with Outstanding Alumni Award

North Central College is honoring Esther Benjamin, associate director for global operations for the Peace Corps, with a 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award.

This is the second of five weekly installments profiling individuals who will receive Alumni Awards & Recognition on Nov. 11 during North Central College’s Sesquicentennial Homecoming Celebration.

Funkhouser—a junior majoring in Japanese and classical civilization—studies at Iwate University in Morioka, a town of about 300,000 located in the Iwate Prefecture. She was shaken by the March 11 earthquake, but her school 40 miles from the coast was not directly impacted by the devastating tsunami.
