More than 200 Naperville-area teachers gathered at North Central College June 18-22 to learn from some of the nation’s leading experts on literacy education.

More than 200 Naperville-area teachers gathered at North Central College June 18-22 to learn from some of the nation’s leading experts on literacy education.

The College partnered with Naperville Community Unit School District 203 to present the weeklong symposium, which provided teachers the opportunity to learn about the latest trends and best practices for teaching reading and writing to children in grades kindergarten through high school.

Alicia Zimmerman of Wheaton was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Student in Secondary Education Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

May 16, 2012—Alicia Zimmerman of Wheaton was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Student in Secondary Education Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Zimmerman is a senior majoring in physical education K-12, with minors in secondary education, health education and wellness. She is the daughter of Todd and Susan Zimmerman and a graduate of Wheaton-Warrenville South High School.

Zimmerman plans to student-teach in the fall, graduate from North Central in December and pursue a full-time teaching position.

North Central College alumnus Robert Taylor is one of 10 Chicago-area educators being honored with 2012 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

May 16, 2012—North Central College alumnus Robert Taylor is one of 10 Chicago-area educators being honored as recipients of a prestigious 2012 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Taylor, who earned his master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from North Central College in 2000, is a second-grade teacher at Central Road School in Community Consolidated School District 15 in Palatine.

District 15 announced Taylor was presented with the award May 9.

Gerald Gems, North Central College professor of health and physical education, presented a paper, titled “Downfall of the Turner Movement in the United States,” at the German American Studies Conference at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., on April 13.

Three-part Human Rights Symposium kicks off April 9

Senior laboratory analyst for Clinton Health Access Initiative in Kenya to give talk on “Fighting HIV/AIDS by Bringing New Technologies Closer to Patients.”

North Central’s Office of International Programs and Leadership, Ethics and Values program kicks off the College’s third annual Spring Symposium on global human rights at noon Monday, April 9, with a guest presentation titled “Fighting HIV/AIDS by Bringing New Technologies Closer to Patients.”

Jonathan Lehe, senior laboratory analyst for the Clinton Health Access Initiative in Nairobi, Kenya, will discuss new point-of-care testing that provides diagnosis and therapy for AIDS patients in resource-limited settings.

Gems completes Fulbright assignments of teaching, advising, giving lectures

Gerald Gems, North Central College professor of health and physical education, lectured and consulted as Fulbright Senior Specialist in Sweden and Denmark.

Gerald Gems, North Central College professor of health and physical education, completed his Fulbright responsibilities from March 10 to 23 in Sweden and Denmark. At Sweden’s Malmö University, he presented a lecture on “Sport, Colonialism, and Politics in the U.S.A.” and held a seminar for Ph.D. graduate students. At the University of Copenhagen, he presented a public lecture on “Sport, Ethnicity, and the Formation of a National Identity” and taught a class on sport concussions to a sport psychology class.

Carius inducted to Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame

Al Carius, North Central College head men’s cross country and associate head men’s track and field coach, was inducted to Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame.

Al Carius, North Central College head men’s cross country and associate head men’s track and field coach, was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame on April 1, according to the Peoria Journal Star.  

A Morton, Ill., native, Carius has coached North Central College to 14 Division III national cross country titles, including the most recent in 2011, and six outdoor and three indoor national track and field titles in his 46 years at the College.
