Rebecca Barnhart earns Freshman Scholar Athlete Award

Human resource major Rebecca Barnhart received the Freshman Scholar Athlete Award for highest GPA during the 2013 Honors Convocation at North Central College.

Rebecca Barnhart, daughter of Chris and Jodi Barnhart of Geneseo, Ill., was awarded the Freshman Scholar Athlete Award during Honors Day May 14 at North Central College. The award recognizes the student-athlete in each class with the highest grade-point average.

A freshman, Rebecca competes on the women’s tennis team and is majoring in human resource management at North Central College. She is a graduate of Geneseo High School. Her name has regularly appeared on the Dean’s List.

Todd Tabor earns Outstanding Major in Human Resource Management Award

Todd Tabor received the Outstanding Major in Human Resource Management Award during the 2013 Honors Convocation at North Central College.

Todd Tabor, son of Vincent and Ann Tabor, of Naperville was awarded the Outstanding Major in Human Resource Management Award during Honors Day May 14 at North Central College.

A senior, Todd is majoring in psychology and human resource management at North Central College. He is a graduate of Neuqua Valley High School.

Students connect with professionals through HR group

North Central College’s Student Human Resources Group gains charter status with HR organization, opportunities to network and learn from HR professionals.

North Central College students involved in the Student Human Resources Group have been working during the past year to see their organization officially named a chartered student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), a leading organization for human resource (HR) professionals.

Their efforts have paid off. On Jan. 17 the student group became an official chapter, opening new opportunities and benefits to students interested in the HR field.

Meredith McDermott is a Specialist in School Psychology (SSP) and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) in the Orion Community Unit School District 223 and Black Hawk Area Special Education District. Her thesis was accepted for presentation at the National Association for School Psychologists (NASP) Annual Convention in Seattle, where she presented her paper, “The Relationship Between Cyberbullying and Depression.”

Graduates of North Central College earn more income over their lifetimes than peers who graduate from most comparable schools, a new survey finds.

Graduates of North Central College earn more income over their lifetimes than peers who graduate from most comparable schools, a new survey finds.

North Central College ranks among the top 15 percent of private, nonprofit schools in the 2011-2012 survey by Payscale.com. The mid-career median salary for North Central College graduates is $81,300, ranking No. 39 out of 303 schools in the private, nonprofit category.

Todd’s interest in people’s motivations and perceptions led him to major in North Central’s human resource management program.

“Work is a big part of people’s lives, so understanding what factors affect people’s attitudes and motivations in the workplace is very significant. The HR courses emphasize that knowledge of these areas can help businesses be more effective.”

The courses included business, psychology, sociology and ethics, giving students like Todd a well-rounded, interdisciplinary understanding of the issues human resource professionals face. Todd says the discussion-based classes and faculty are highlights of his North Central experience.

Todd also studied abroad in France, Italy, Germany and England during D-Terms and landed an internship at a business consulting firm near campus. “I learned the principles of effective organizations and saw how interpersonal dynamics in organizations can affect how they achieve their goals.”
