Wade Balsamo, a freshman at North Central College, worked with his father to create an award-winning short film about the philanthropic organization Walk On.

Balsamo, of Barrington, is passionate about production and his efforts to promote Walk On, a nonprofit that provides equine-assisted activities to people with physical, cognitive, social and emotional disabilities. Walk On helps inspire people to advance to their highest potential.

North Central College’s 14th annual Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference Feb. 21-22 will help aspiring artists learn to become successful entrepreneurs.

The SEA Conference provides educational resources to help aspiring artists gain entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed to establish and maintain careers as independent artists. The conference features performances, workshops, panel discussions and other activities tailored to actors, filmmakers, musicians, painters, sculptors, writers and other artists.

North Central College will send a record 44 students to the prestigious National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) April 3-5 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Forty proposals submitted by these students were accepted for presentation.

Total enrollment stands at 3,048 undergraduate and graduate students, eclipsing the 3,000 mark for the second straight year. The College welcomed 852 new full-time undergraduate students. Enrollment this fall includes a record number of international students and increased representation of out-of-state students and veterans.

Several student broadcasters representing WONC-FM won eight student Silver Dome Awards—three are first-place—from Illinois Broadcasters Association.

Several student broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1, North Central College’s student-run station, attended the annual Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) 2013 Student Silver Dome Awards, held Sept. 13 at Illinois State University in Normal.

WONC had received eight nominations in the state contest and took home eight awards, claiming three first-place, three second-place and two third-place trophies. Illinois colleges and universities of all sizes with radio/TV programs are eligible to compete.

North Central College students will discuss their scholarly work Aug. 1 during the poster session of the 2013 Summer Undergraduate Research Colloquium (SURC).

The SURC poster session takes place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 in Smith Hall of Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St. (The session previously was scheduled to take place in Heininger Auditorium at the Larrance Academic Center). Most of the 40 students who participated in the 2013 SURC will be present.

North Central College student broadcaster Kevin Jackman ’14 is named Best Sportscaster in the state at the 2013 Illinois Broadcasters Association.

North Central College student broadcaster Kevin Jackman ’14 was named Best Sportscaster in the state at the 2013 Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) Silver Dome Awards, held June 19 in Peoria. The Silver Domes are the most prestigious broadcast performance award in the state.

Jackman, a senior majoring in broadcast communication and interactive media studies/convergent media, competed with commercial broadcasters to win his first-place trophy in the Small Market Radio division.
