North Central hosts 2012 Blue Key National Conference

More than 100 students from across the country traveled to North Central College for the 2012 Blue Key National Conference, which took place Jan. 13-14.

The students represented 13 different colleges and universities, ranging from the University of Portland in Oregon to Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. Over the course of the conference, students had the opportunity to participate in a vast array of activities.

The free exhibit, “Eclectic Dreams,” is on display through March 31 in North Central’s Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery, 31 S. Ellsworth St., Naperville. Wohlrab greeted visitors during a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 8.

Self-Employment in the Arts Conference Feb. 24-25 helps careers of aspiring artists

Participants will learn how to run their own businesses as artists Feb. 24-25 during North Central College's Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference.

College and high school students, educators and adults who aspire to be self-employed artists will gain valuable information about running their own businesses as artists Feb. 24-25, 2012 when North Central College hosts the 12th annual Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference.

WONC hosts John Drury High School Radio Awards Nov. 19

Nov. 7, 2011—Chicago ABC 7 News anchor/reporter John Garcia will join John Madormo, general manager of North Central College’s nationally acclaimed WONC-FM 89.1, on Nov. 19 to honor the best of high school radio broadcasters for 2011.

Garcia will address nominees and announce winners for the ninth annual John Drury High School Radio Awards at a ceremony beginning at noon on Saturday, Nov. 19, in the College’s theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. The event is hosted by North Central College and WONC radio.

North Central alum Andrew Phillips joins front office of pro team

Andrew Phillips, a 2009 North Central College graduate, will join the front office of the Akron Racers pro softball team as director of marketing and PR.

Oct. 19, 2011—Andrew Phillips, a 2009 North Central College graduate, is joining the front office of the professional softball team the Akron Racers as director of marketing and public relations.

Prior to accepting a position with the Racers, Phillips worked with another National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) team, the Chicago Bandits. While a student at North Central, Phillips interned with the Bandits for two years before assuming the role of director of public relations, social media and ticket sales after graduation.

Eight North Central College students joined Associate Professor of Speech Communication Steve Macek during the weekend of Oct. 7-9 for a Verandah course at the annual Chicago International Film Festival.

The festival features contemporary films from countries around the world that often don’t receive mainstream attention or distribution. Macek, who is also coordinator of Urban and Suburban Studies and an instructor for the Chicago Term, developed the film festival Verandah, which was offered for the first time this fall term.
