North Central College student Maria Gommel honored as 2012 Lincoln Laureate

The Lincoln Academy of Illinois is honoring North Central College Goldwater Scholar Maria Gommel as a 2012 Lincoln Laureate.

Maria Gommel has been named North Central College’s 2012 Lincoln Laureate.

Gommel is a senior from Malta, Ill., who is double-majoring in actuarial science and mathematics and minoring in economics. She intends to pursue a doctorate in mathematics after graduation.

She is a participant in North Central’s College Scholars Honors Program for high-achieving undergraduates. She spent a year working with two other students and mathematics professor Linda Gao on mathematical modeling research in epidemiology.

North Central’s academic departments, campus offices host documentary Oct. 4

Faculty/student panel discussion and screening of “Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture” is set for Oct. 4.

North Central College will present the documentary, “Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall. A faculty and student discussion, with audience participation, will follow the free event.

Maria Gommel

Maria discovered North Central College while searching online for actuarial science programs. But once she started classes, she found a new passion in pure mathematics. “As I took more math-based classes, I realized I liked them more than actuarial science and added a major in math.”

She quickly delved into opportunities in mathematics. In the summer following her sophomore year, she collaborated with a mathematics professor in research that used mathematical models to investigate the behavior of the virus that causes chickenpox and shingles.

Her junior year, she was honored as a Goldwater Scholar, the highest national undergraduate award for achievement in mathematics, science and engineering.

“I loved all my experiences and am glad I chose to come to North Central.”

Maria is currently enrolled in the University of Iowa's mathematics Ph.D. program. She plans to teach at the college level.
