Modern music marvel Herbie Hancock transcends music genres and limitations when he performs Oct. 29 at North Central College.

Herbie Hancock, the iconic jazz pianist and multiple Grammy Award-winner, will perform his eclectic take on modern music Oct. 29 in North Central College’s Wentz Concert Hall as part of the first solo tour of his legendary career.

Hancock is a powerful influence in acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B music. His career spans five decades, his recordings have earned 12 Grammy Awards and he continues to amaze audiences with his energetic live performances.

Schola Cantorum de Venezuela, the premier touring chorus of Latin America, will perform Oct. 26 in North Central College’s acoustically stunning Wentz Concert Hall.

Schola Cantorum de Venezuela is one of the most important choral societies to emerge as part of the growing choral movement in Latin America. The choir performs a broad range of works, and its repertoire includes works by Spanish, Italian, French and English Renaissance, contemporary Venezuelan and universal composers.

Blanchet performs live on radio program

George Blanchet, percussionist and lecturer in music, performed a new composition live on the classical music station WFMT-FM 98.7 on Jan. 24.

Feb. 18, 2011—George Blanchet, percussionist and lecturer in music, performed live on the classical music station WFMT-FM 98.7 during an 8 p.m. show on Jan. 24 with Alicia Cordoba Tait on oboe. They performed a piece titled “Conversations for Oboe and Percussion” by Patricia Moorehead. The piece was inspired by and composed for Blanchet and Cordoba Tait who are engaged to be married. Blanchet teaches percussion and directs the Percussion Ensemble at North Central.

Record number of students to present at national research conference

A record 38 students from various academic areas will represent North Central at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research this spring.

Musical talents of North Central College students will be showcased in Wentz Concert Hall during a series of six performances in May and June.

April 22, 2011—Musical talents of North Central College students will be showcased in the stunning acoustics of Wentz Concert Hall during a series of six performances in May and June.

The concerts feature both choral and instrumental ensembles performing in Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. New Music Festival features contemporary classical compositions

North Central celebrates contemporary classical music during its inaugural New Music Festival April 11-12 and features Dal Niente and Brooklyn Rider.

March 9, 2011—North Central College will celebrate contemporary classical music during its inaugural New Music Festival April 11-12.

The two-day festival will feature performances by contemporary music group Dal Niente and string quartet Brooklyn Rider. As part of the festival, acclaimed Russian composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, a member of the Silk Road Project and composer-in-residence at North Central College, will coach members of various area high school ensembles.
