North Central College alumnus Dr. Karl Brooks speaks at MLK prayer breakfast

Alumnus Karl Brooks ’90, a Joliet Junior College administrator, was keynote speaker at the College’s MLK prayer breakfast.

North Central College alumnus Dr. Karl Brooks ’90 spoke to students, faculty, staff and guests about the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy during the College’s annual MLK prayer breakfast Jan. 21.

Dean of student success at Joliet Junior College, Brooks encouraged audience members to reflect on what inspires them—saying King’s legacy is a source of daily inspiration to him.

“We are all benefactors of Martin Luther King’s legacy,” Brooks said. “He calls us all to a higher moral and ethical ground.”

North Central College students may apply by Feb. 20 to present their original research at the College’s 16th annual Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research, which will take place during Honors Day on Tuesday, May 14.

Mueller and VanHorn receive award from prestigious teaching institute

North Central College’s Jonathan Mueller, professor of psychology, and Daniel VanHorn, assistant professor of psychology, are recipients of the 2013 Doug Bernstein Award from the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology (NITOP) for their poster presentation titled “Fantasy Researcher League: Engaging Students in Psychological Research.”

Lynn Getz Schopler '84

Lynn Getz Schopler launched Golden Elders Inc., an in-house adult care facility that provides an extended family setting for patients with Alzheimer’s. For four years, she took care of her parents, feeling the need to honor them and help other caregivers. In 2008, she opened an adult day care in her Naperville home to create a safe and warm environment for her guests and respite for their caregivers. Schopler also teaches psychology at the College of DuPage.

Kai Ruggeri '06

Kai Ruggeri holds several research and teaching positions within the University of Cambridge (Darwin College, Engineering Design Centre and Department of Psychology). He also holds a senior analyst position at RAND Europe, an independent not-for-profit research institute whose mission is to help improve policy and decision-making through research and analysis. He is also director of the Junior Researcher Programme in psychology and continues with AMCS, a health finance company, as an economic and international development consultant.

Elizabeth “Jan” Edgar '70

Elizabeth “Jan” Edgar, certified fund-raising executive (CFRE), is the executive director of the Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center Foundation in Joliet, IL. Edgar previously served as the director of development at the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) in Schaumburg, IL, where she created and led initiatives for annual major and planned gifts, corporate relations, cause and marketing, and awards and recognition programs. Before her work with the AAD, Edgar served as the first executive director of the Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, IL.

Richard S. Harley '73

Richard S. Harley, Ph.D., began serving as the president of the Illinois School Psychologist Association (ISPA) in June 2012. He has been employed as a school psychologist by the City of Chicago School District 299 for the past 27 years. Since 1989, Harley has served on the ISPA Governing Board in the capacities of president-elect, secretary and governmental affairs chair and on the African-American affairs committee. He has also participated with other ISPA colleagues to draft the position paper that led to the development of the Children’s Mental Health Bill in Illinois.

Catherine Hill '04

Catherine Hill is an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Southern California (USC). She started at USC in 2007 after earning her master’s degree in kinesiology and health promotion at the University of Kentucky. While at Kentucky, Hill handled the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. After graduating from North Central she worked as an intern at Northwestern University with the men’s soccer and women’s lacrosse programs. She resides in Manhattan Beach, CA.
