May 21, 2012—Elizabeth Burrow of Westmont was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in Literature Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Burrow is a senior majoring in English literature with a minor in secondary education at North Central College. A nontraditional student, she transferred to North Central from the College of DuPage. Her name has regularly appeared on the College’s Dean’s List, which recognizes students with high academic achievement.

May 21, 2012—Anna Laky of Villa Park was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in Chemistry Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Laky is a senior majoring in chemistry with minors in secondary education and psychology at North Central College. She is the daughter of Michael and Susan Laky and is a 2008 graduate of Willowbrook High School. After graduating from North Central in June, she plans to teach high school chemistry.

May 21, 2012—Mike Giaquinto of Hackettstown, N.J. was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in Physical Education Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Giaquinto is a senior majoring in physical education with a minor in secondary education. He is the son of Lisa and Frank Giaquinto and a graduate of Warren Hills Regional High School.

Alicia Zimmerman of Wheaton was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Student in Secondary Education Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

May 16, 2012—Alicia Zimmerman of Wheaton was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Student in Secondary Education Award during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Zimmerman is a senior majoring in physical education K-12, with minors in secondary education, health education and wellness. She is the daughter of Todd and Susan Zimmerman and a graduate of Wheaton-Warrenville South High School.

Zimmerman plans to student-teach in the fall, graduate from North Central in December and pursue a full-time teaching position.

North Central College alumnus earns Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching

North Central College alumnus Robert Taylor is one of 10 Chicago-area educators being honored with 2012 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

May 16, 2012—North Central College alumnus Robert Taylor is one of 10 Chicago-area educators being honored as recipients of a prestigious 2012 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Taylor, who earned his master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from North Central College in 2000, is a second-grade teacher at Central Road School in Community Consolidated School District 15 in Palatine.

District 15 announced Taylor was presented with the award May 9.

North Central College alumni honored for teaching excellence in Naperville schools

Two alumni of North Central College’s music education program are being recognized by Naperville Community Unit School District 203 for excellence in teaching.

May 15, 2012—Two alumni of North Central College’s music education program are being recognized by Naperville Community Unit School District 203 for excellence in teaching.

Nicholas Janssen, a 2005 graduate of North Central College, received District 203’s Outstanding Early Educator Award for his work as choral director at Naperville North High School. Emily Steffen, a 2010 graduate, received the district’s Outstanding First-Year Teacher Award  for her work at Naper and Ellsworth elementary schools.

Jackie Murawska, North Central College adjunct instructor of mathematics, led a workshop titled “Fractions, Frustration, Ratios, and the Condominium Community Problem” for middle school teachers at the Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago (MMC) Conference of Workshops held in New Lenox, Ill., Jan. 28.

Wolf publishes article, teaches online and at workshop

Gregory H. Wolf, North Central College professor of German, and a member of the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) published the feature and lead article, “A Friend of Pirates History. From 42-112 to a World Series Championship,” on April 6 in The Hardball Times, an Internet site focusing on the history of Major League Baseball and advanced sabermetric analysis.

Carballo promotes Teach First program at school, conference

Julie Carballo, North Central College adjunct instructor of education and director of Teach First, gave a talk about the Teach First program to the Future Educators Association at West Aurora High School on April 17. She has also given presentations to the National Honor Society and Future Educators of America groups at East Aurora High School.

Walk, remember, raise funds at Relay for Life

North Central College invites members of the community to join Relay for Life, an American Cancer Society fundraising event hosted by the College April 27-28.

For the ninth year, North Central will host Relay for Life, an American Cancer Society event that gives people in communities a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and raise funds to fight the disease.
