North Central College to honor Maria Wynne, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana, with a 2012 Outstanding Alumni Award.

North Central College is honoring Maria Wynne of Chicago with a 2012 Outstanding Alumni Award.

Wynne and five others will be honored during the College’s Homecoming Convocation at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at North Central College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville.

It was North Central’s study abroad program and welcoming admission staff that sealed Jenna’s decision to enroll.

“When I came to North Central, I knew I wanted to major in Spanish and possibly teach,” she says.

That dream became a reality after graduation when Jenna was selected for the highly competitive Teach For America program. She’ll be teaching high school Spanish and working on a master’s degree.

Jenna developed her language skills and discovered a passion for Spanish translation while studying abroad in Costa Rica. She also volunteered at her church working with lawyers and Spanish translation to help immigrants from Mexico. Those experiences led her to add minors in leadership and conflict resolution and develop a research project she presented at a national conference.

Jenna says, “Study abroad more than once—as much as possible! Nothing helps you learn the language better.”

Survey finds North Central College graduates among highest income-earners

Graduates of North Central College earn more income over their lifetimes than peers who graduate from most comparable schools, a new survey finds.

North Central College ranks among the top 15 percent of private, nonprofit schools in the 2011-2012 survey by Payscale.com. The mid-career median salary for North Central College graduates is $81,300, ranking No. 39 out of 303 schools in the private, nonprofit category.

The public is invited to the free reception, and complimentary refrehments will be served. Parada will give two talks about his work during the reception, one in English at 6:30 p.m. and one in Spanish at 7:30 p.m.
