Four performances of “A Streetcar Named Desire” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8-1 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 in Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Emily Cramer, North Central College assistant professor of communication, had a book chapter published in a collection titled “A Communication Perspective on the Military: Interactions, Messages, and Discourses” by editors Erin Sahlstein Parcell and Lynne M. Webb. The book is a comprehensive collection of essays and empirical studies on communication and the military.

Federal grant funds Chinese-language summer camp at North Central College

A National Security Language Initiative STARTALK grant made North Central College’s Chinese immersion program possible for 16 high school and college students.

Sixteen high school and college students learned Chinese language this summer during a two-week North Central College camp, thanks to a federal STARTALK grant through the National Security Language Initiative.

The selective and prestigious STARTALK program is a federal government initiative to increase the number of young Americans learning and speaking critical-need foreign languages by offering engaging summer experiences. North Central’s camp was held July 6-17.

The hundreds of faculty candidates who’ve visited campus the past 20 years typically ended their interviews in the office of R. Devadoss Pandian, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty. In his fifth floor office of Old Main, they all learned about his passion for teaching—and the No. 1 qualification for working at North Central College.

“You have to teach to every student in the class and in a class of 30 or 35 students, that’s not a small thing,” says Pandian, describing the qualities of a great teacher.
