Self Employment in the Arts Conference helps creative students gain a business edge

North Central College hosts the 11th annual Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference Feb. 25-26.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Jan. 26, 2011)—College and high school students, educators and adults who aspire to be self-employed artists will gain valuable information about running their own business Feb. 25-26 when North Central College hosts the 11th annual Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference.

Moran earns prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship

North Central College student Peggy Moran has earned a prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship.

Author and entrepreneur Peggy Moran knows the exact moment that triggered her decision to resume her education. It was in 2008, when her college-aged daughter was hospitalized with a life-threatening condition.

“That changed the way I view the present tense,” Moran says. “Everything suddenly became more meaningful, and time became of the essence in a different way.”

Mock Trial team wins awards at invitational tourney

Senior Josh Bailey, named Outstanding Attorney
North Central’s Mock Trial team wins civility award and senior Josh Bailey is named Outstanding Attorney at national invitational tournament.

Feb. 4, 2011—North Central’s Mock Trial team competed at the 23rd annual National Invitational Tournament at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, Jan. 28-29. The tournament is the largest and most challenging contest the team faces all year. Of the 70 participating teams, 50 earned bids to last season’s national competition.

Record number of students to present at national research conference

A record 38 students from various academic areas will represent North Central at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research this spring.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Jan. 31, 2011)—For the second year, a record number of North Central College students have been chosen to participate in the nation’s leading conference on undergraduate research.

D-Term courses take students around the globe

In December, students take advantage of life-changing study abroad opportunities.

Jan. 24, 2011—North Central College’s trimester format offers students a break from regular classes between Thanksgiving and the new year. During December—or D-Term—students can take advantage of North Central’s study abroad opportunities.

Michael D. Oldenettel '88

Michael D. Oldenettel was named the 2011 Treasurer for the Illinois Association of Realtors. He’ll serve as chair of the finance committee and vice chair of the strategic planning committee. Active in real estate for 21 years, he’s the managing broker/owner of RE/MAX Results Plus, Inc. in Jacksonville, IL. He’s a two-term past president of the Jacksonville Area Association of Realtors and led the association in 1995 and again in 2005. He’s served as president of the Illinois Real Estate Educational Foundation in 2007 and 2008 and served twice as dean of the Realtors Institute Working Group.

Jeff Schaetzke '92

Jeff Schaetzke was the music director of a musical “Dames at Sea” at Skylight Opera Theatre in the Cabot Theatre in Wisconsin, which ran September 17 to October 3. Called “the most ingenious show on or off Broadway” by Time Magazine, “Dames at Sea” is a musical parody of the grand and glorious Busby Berkeley movie musicals of the 1930s. He lives in Grafton, WI, with his wife Sheila.

Mike Koon '93

Mike Koon served as lead clinician on behalf of the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers at Bloomington High School. The clinic addresses the P.A. announcer’s role, the Do’s and Don’ts of announcing football, how to handle emergency situations, scriptwriting and working with a spotter. Koon is assistant sports information director and the voice of University of Illinois football.

André Buchenot '02

André Buchenot earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His dissertation explored applications of literacy theory in an online writing course. This fall, he accepted a position as assistant professor of English with an emphasis on digital literacy at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. He is presenting again at the Conference on College Composition and Communication in Atlanta in April 2011 and at other conferences in the coming months. He may be reached at buchenot@iupui.edu.
