College appoints coordinator of undergraduate research

Nancy Peterson, professor of chemistry, was recently appointed the College’s first coordinator of undergraduate research.

Feb. 18, 2011—Nancy Peterson, professor of chemistry, was recently appointed the College’s first coordinator of undergraduate research. In making the announcement during a faculty meeting fall term 2010, R. Devadoss Pandian, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, noted that one of the objectives of the 2007-2012 Strategic Plan is to expand faculty-student collaboration, including undergraduate research.

Mock Trial team members recognized

North Central's Mock Trial team of new members competes in Midwest tournament. Two students earn awards for Outstanding Attorney and Outstanding Witnesses.

Two members of North Central’s Mock Trial team were recognized at the University of St. Francis Mock Trial Midwest Challenge Part V Tournament Dec. 4-5. Joshua Bailey ’11, majoring in political science and English writing, earned awards for Outstanding Attorney and Outstanding Witness—a notable achievement because students are rarely recognized for exceptional performance in both roles.

During the last weekend in October, the forensics team traveled to Lee’s Summit, Mo., near Kansas City, to compete at the Central States Swing Forensics Tournament, which included two different tournaments on Oct. 30-31. North Central’s team took first place both days and six students placed in the finals—“an incredible feat,” says John Stanley, assistant professor of speech communication, assistant director of forensics and director of individual events.



Music education program receives national award

Oct. 11, 2010--North Central College's music education program and its student chapter of the National Association for Music Education (MENC) have been recognized by MENC with an award for outstanding growth.

In the announcement to the College, MENC's North Central president remarked, "Your dedication and commitment to the young students studying to be teachers is such a contribution to our profession. Your guidance and knowledge both inspire and mentor these young people."

Oct. 8, 2010—North Central College associate professors of education Maureen Kincaid, Nancy Keiser and Kristine Servais were recognized at the American Institute of Higher Education’s 5th International Conference in Orlando, Fla., Sept. 29-Oct. 1, for presenting the conference’s top paper.

March 3, 2010—Seven computer science students from North Central College excelled in a recent programming contest.

Three students claimed first place and four took third place in the advanced level of competition at the 2010 Associated Colleges of the Chicagoland Area (ACCA) contest Feb. 20 at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights.

Princeton Review names North Central among tops for video game design

The Princeton Review has named North Central College’s interactive media studies program among the top 50 video game design programs in North America.

(March 1, 2010—The Princeton Review has named North Central College’s interactive media studies program among the top 50 video game design programs in North America.

The Princeton Review and GamePro magazine selected the best institutions in the United States and Canada that offer video game design studies. Eight top programs were ranked, and North Central is among 42 others recognized as distinguished.

When U.S. News and World Report this fall placed North Central College among the top 80 institutions in the nation that have a special commitment to undergraduate teaching, it confirmed what students, alumni and the campus community already knew, that effective teaching has always been central to the mission and the performance of the College.
