Ereka Funkhouser receives academic awards in Japanese, division

Ereka Funkhouser was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Major in Japanese Award and the outstanding student in her academic division at North Central College.

Ereka Funkhouser of York, Pa., was recognized with two academic awards—the Outstanding Major in Japanese and the Outstanding Student in the Arts and Letters Division—during Honors Day May 15 at North Central College.

Funkhouser is a senior majoring in Japanese and classical civilization with a minor in English at North Central College. She is the daughter of John Funkhouser and a graduate of York Suburban Senior High School.

Film Central, North Central College’s indie/social-change film series, presents guest speaker Diane Nilan and the national premiere screening of the short film “Littlest Nomads” at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall. The film is the second in the Film Central series during spring term and is sponsored by the College’s English department, fine & performing arts, Office of International Programs and Leadership, Ethics and Values.

North Central College student reads at Chicago’s Citywide Poetry Festival

North Central College student Emily Schmidt participated in the 13th annual Citywide Undergraduate Poetry Festival in Chicago.

The festival was held April 5 at Columbia College Chicago and featured the talents of 12 poets from Chicago-area colleges and universities who read their own original works. Participating institutions included DePaul University, Northwestern University and the University of Chicago.

Philip Glende, North Central College visiting assistant professor of English, publishes article on newspaper coverage of organized labor in mid-20th century.

Philip Glende, North Central College visiting assistant professor of English and advisor to The Chronicle, had his article, titled “Labor Makes the News: Newspapers, Journalism, and Organized Labor, 1933-1955,” published in the March 2012 issue of “Enterprise and Society,” the international journal of business history (Vol. 13, no. 1, pp. 39-52). The article is a summary of Glende’s dissertation research and examines newspaper coverage of organized labor during the burst of union activity that began in the early 1930s.

King’s short story wins award and publication

Patricia Grace King, North Central College adjunct assistant professor of English, won a chapbook award from The Florida Review for her short story, “Rubia.”

Patricia Grace King, adjunct assistant professor of English, won The Florida Review’s 2011 Jeanne Leiby Chapbook Award for her short story, “Rubia.” She received a cash prize and her story will be published in a letterpress, hand-bound chapbook published by Hoopsnake Press later in 2012.

A daily newspaper talks to Zachary Michael Jack, assistant professor of English, about his family's roots in Iowa and his latest novel.

The Daily Iowan, the newspaper of the University of Iowa, interviewed Jack about his new book, "Native Soulmate: A Season in Search of a Love Homegrown." Jack says it's part love story, part adventure story and an exploration of current issues that concern rural and small-town Iowa and the Midwest.

North Central College’s Jack Shindler, professor of English and director of international programs, and Kelly Pilleux, international student advisor, presented independent sessions at NAFSA, the Association of International Educators Region V annual conference at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Nov. 2-4. NAFSA Region V is composed of Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin and has approximately 800 members representing more than 250 institutions.
