Student who aspires to become a mission doctor recounts visit to Haiti

Sophomore psychology major Joshua Male was featured in the SouthtownStar newspaper, which recounted his recent experience in Haiti.

In December, Male spent eight days in Haiti with Mission of Hope, where he gained experience painting houses, clearing trash from streets and comforting patients in a prosthetic lab.

On a Mission of Hope

Seven North Central students traveled to Haiti in December 2009 to work at an orphanage, school and medical center.

Little did they know that within a few weeks, they’d be raising several thousand dollars to support relief efforts after the January 12 earthquake.

Haiti Crisis puts alumna in the spotlight

During the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, Jaclyn Mitchell ’99 served as spokesperson for the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago as part of her position as director of marketing and communications. Among her tasks was to handle a press conference at O’Hare International Airport upon the arrival of a United Airlines flight of evacuees. “It was totally amazing,” she said of a day that stretched until 4 a.m. Mitchell and her staff worked without a break for 10 days following the January 12 event.
