Neil Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics, and four current and former students—Donglun Liu ’14, Steven Mackey ’13, Tyler Schroeder ’13 and Kyle Thomas ’13—were coauthors of a paper titled “Average Bridge Number of Shadow Resolutions” that was published in the Journal of Knot Theory and its Ramifications, October 2013.

North Central’s math program wins grant for high school enrichment program

North Central College’s mathematics department secured Dolciani Mathematics Enrichment Grant to aid high-achieving high school math students.

North Central College’s department of mathematics recently secured a competitive Dolciani Mathematics Enrichment Grant (DMEG) from the Mathematical Association of America. The grant will be used to develop E2 (Expository Engagement): North Central Math Circle, an after-school math enrichment program for area high school students.

“It’s really exciting to be able to engage young, math-minded students at North Central,” said Neil Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics and project director of E2.

During spring term, Oesterle Library exhibits feature publications by writers in the College community, Muslim Journeys collection and spring newsletter.

During spring term, Oesterle Library will display exhibits in its lobby that highlight professional publications by writers in the College community and selections from the books and resources in the “Bridging Cultures” Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys collection. Exhibit descriptions include:

Neil Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics, was coauthor of a chapter in a book on service learning in higher education.

Neil Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics, was a coauthor of a chapter in the book titled “Service-Learning in Higher Education: Connecting the Global to the Local.” The book emerged from presentations at the Fourth International Symposium on Service-Learning held in China in September 2011, where Nicholson co-presented with colleagues from the University of Indiana-Bloomington and William Jewell College.

SIFE named regional champion, qualifies for nationals

North Central College’s SIFE team is named regional champion and qualifies to compete at nationals after presenting projects to business leaders.

After participating in the SIFE Regional Competition in Chicago on April 16, North Central College’s SIFE team was named a regional champion and qualified to compete in the SIFE USA National Exposition May 22-24 in Kansas City. Some 65 teams competed at the Chicago regional event.

North Central College’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) joined forces with employee volunteers at Lowe’s Naperville home improvement retail store to create a self-sustaining, organic garden for immigrant residents associated with the nonprofit Emmanuel House CDC.

Neil R. Nicholson, North Central College assistant professor of mathematics, recently had an article published in the Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications. His article, titled “Piecewise-Linear Virtual Knots,” both investigates how various classical knot theory results carry over to the space of virtual knots and classifies piecewise-linear virtual knots up to edge index six.
