North Central College launches new media studies department

North Central College is launching a new media studies department that combines journalism, broadcast communication and interactive media studies.

North Central College is launching a new media studies department this fall to prepare students for the increasingly dynamic media field. The new department combines journalism, broadcast communication and interactive media studies (IMS). The popular IMS major blends art, computer science, English and communication.

“The goal is to combine these fields of study to mirror the changing digital media landscape,” says R. Devadoss Pandian, North Central’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty.

When Patricia Schacht, associate professor of psychology, offered a senior-level seminar at North Central College called “Bullying,” all 20 spots quickly filled. So she opened a second section, which filled just as fast. An expert in child development and parental behaviors, Schacht is finding an insatiable demand for information on the topic of bullying and its prevention, her topic of scholarly research.

Feb. 18, 2011—Nancy Peterson, professor of chemistry, was recently appointed the College’s first coordinator of undergraduate research. In making the announcement during a faculty meeting fall term 2010, R. Devadoss Pandian, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, noted that one of the objectives of the 2007-2012 Strategic Plan is to expand faculty-student collaboration, including undergraduate research.
