Sarah Scanlin was honored with the 2011 Outstanding Student in Secondary Education Award during Honors Day May 17 at North Central College.

Scanlin is a graduating senior majoring in biology with a minor in secondary education. While at North Central she was inducted into the Illinois Mu Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, a national honor society that recognizes student-athletes with high academic and high athletic achievement. She competed with North Central's women's cross country team.

Artwork of two North Central College students is featured in a spring exhibit titled “Altered Words.”  

“Altered Words” includes paintings, ink drawings, ceramics and mixed media artwork created by senior Kate Pauley and junior Ariel Hodge. The free exhibit runs March 13 through April 4 in the College’s Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St. An artist reception will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 28; complimentary refreshments will be served.

North Central College junior Molly Gstalter studies full time in Heidelberg, Germany, while interning as English teacher to students in local secondary school.

Molly Gstalter, a North Central College junior, has expanded her studying abroad experience during fall term in Heidelberg, Germany, by pursuing an internship. Gstalter is taking classes in German full time at the Heidelberg Universität through the American Junior Year Program, while also interning as an assistant English teacher at Hölderlin Gymnasium, a secondary school in Heidelberg.

Gstalter carries a major in German and minors in secondary education and English language learning at North Central College and is a resident of Skokie, Ill.

North Central College alumnus Josh Stumpenhorst named Illinois Teacher of the Year

The Illinois State Board of Education has named North Central alumnus Josh Stumpenhorst recipient of the 2011-2012 Illinois Teacher of the Year Award.

Oct. 24, 2011—North Central College alumnus Josh Stumpenhorst is the 2011-2012 Illinois Teacher of the Year.

Stumpenhorst earned his undergraduate degree in social science and secondary education at North Central College. He teaches language arts and social science to sixth-graders at Lincoln Junior High School in Naperville Community Unit School District 203. He credits his experience at North Central for helping him achieve success as an educator.

André Buchenot '02

André Buchenot earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His dissertation explored applications of literacy theory in an online writing course. This fall, he accepted a position as assistant professor of English with an emphasis on digital literacy at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. He is presenting again at the Conference on College Composition and Communication in Atlanta in April 2011 and at other conferences in the coming months. He may be reached at buchenot@iupui.edu.
