Monica Vuksanovich, North Central College visiting assistant professor of Spanish, and Katherine Pope, director of the English Language Institute (ELI), presented a talk titled “Partnerships for Success: Building and Growing University-level ESL Programs” at the statewide Illinois Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages-Bilingual Education (ITBE) conference this spring.

Kristy Dallas, soprano, gave her junior recital in Cisel Recital Hall, Montana State University Billings. While in Chicago, Dallas was a regular guest soloist for Robert Frazen’s One on One Television Show. She made her professional opera debut with Rimrock Opera (RO) in 2010, as Sylvaine in The Merry Widow and also had principal roles in RO's tours of American Opera Idol and The Night Harry Stopped Smoking, while serving as Education Coordinator for RO. Other roles include Lula in Venture Theatre’s Violet and as an actor in the 2010 Wet Ink Festival at Venture Theatre.

Spanish department features four films, faculty discussions during film festival

North Central College’s Spanish department and Fusión Espanola host “Festival de cine iberoamericano,” a viewing of films and discussion series, April 30-May 8.

North Central College’s Spanish department and student club Fusión Espanola cohost “Festival de cine iberoamericano,” a viewing of four films and faculty-led discussion series April 30 through May 8. The film festival is meant to serve as a cultural component for the Spanish language program. All screenings are free, open to the campus community and will be held in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall.

Monica Vuksanovich (photo, left), North Central College visiting assistant professor of Spanish, and Karin Duncker-Hoffmann (right), instructor of ESL (English as a second language), coauthored the article, “Writing with English Language Learners: Advice for Training Writing Center Tutors.” It was published in the Summer 2013 issue of ITBE Link, the quarterly publication by the Illinois Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages-Bilingual Education (ITBE).

Emily Stewart earns Outstanding Major in Psychology Award

Emily Stewart received the Outstanding Major in Psychology Award during the 2013 Honors Convocation at North Central College.

Emily Stewart, daughter of Jon and Cheri Stewart of Dixon, Ill., was awarded the Outstanding Major in Psychology Award during Honors Day May 14 at North Central College.

A senior, Emily has a double major in psychology and in Spanish at North Central College. She is a graduate of Dixon High School.

North Central College graduate Mark Zajac has earned a spot as a policy fellow in Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn’s Chicago office through the Dunn Fellowship program.

Recent North Central College graduate Mark Zajac ’12 of Des Plaines, Ill., has earned a spot as a policy fellow in Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn’s Chicago office through the James H. Dunn Memorial Fellowship Program.

“I’ve always been interested in all things international, traveling to other countries and foreign affairs,” Zajac says. “This fellowship opens a lot of doors and will help me to better understand the world.”

North Central College seniors Elisabeth Volkamer and Jessica Martin are chosen for internship in Nashville that empowers women to promote social justice.

North Central College seniors Elisabeth Volkamer and Jessica Martin were accepted to a 10-month internship at Belle H. Bennett House, an intentional community for the empowerment of young women at Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, TN.

The program, beginning in August, consists of 40-hour work weeks that focus on female empowerment and the eradication of racism through volunteer work, community living and internships at various organizations in the area.

Flamenco Festival showcases Spanish culture during February

North Central College hosts its annual Flamenco Festival, featuring rhythmic music, lectures, dance and film from Spanish culture.

North Central College will host its sixth annual Flamenco Festival during the month of February, showcasing the emotive, rhythmic music and dance from Spanish culture. Several events are planned—including dance classes, lectures, a performance and film. All are free and open to the public.
