North Central welcomes performer Timothy Mooney, who will give a one-man dramatic presentation of his two shows “Molière Than Thou” and “Lots O’ Shakespeare” at 7 p.m. Monday, May 9, in Koten Chapel. This event is free and hosted by Cultural Events.

Winter term’s first NC Review Underground is happening tonight at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, in the basement of the Rolland Center Boilerhouse Cafe. This event will feature a reading by Andrei Guruianu, assistant professor of English, and Amy Elisabeth Olson ’12, with musical guests Tony Wadas and Justin Spencer.

Students especially are encouraged to bring and share your writing, comedy, instruments or just show up and unwind with friends and free refreshments. Also, the fall 2010 issue of NC Review will be released.

Renard Jackson (photo), assistant professor of education, and Jack Shindler, professor of English and director of international programs, participated in the Scholarship of Pedagogy Symposium sponsored by the Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area (ACCA). Hosted by Dominican University on Oct. 30, the conference was titled Connecting the Dots: Helping Students Integrate Learning Across Contexts.

Guruianu publishes his memoir "Metal and Plum"

Andrei Guruianu, assistant professor of English, released his memoir “Metal and Plum” by Mayapple Press in November 2010. It’s available at Amazon and www.mayapplepress.com. His book conveys the impact of immigration on his family, contrasting the hardships of Ceausescu’s Romania with the challenges of adaptation to the United States and how painful it is to go home and find the place you knew is no longer there.

Laurel White is Outstanding Senior Woman

Laurel White was named the 2010 Outstanding Senior Woman. Earlier during Honors Convocation, she was also recognized as the Outstanding Student in the Arts & Letters Division and Outstanding Student in English and received the Megan Sweeney Award for achieving the highest level of academic excellence. A College Scholar, White will graduate with a double major in English writing and interactive media studies and a minor in social change/public advocacy. She is president of the English honor society Sigma Tau Delta, a tutor in the Writing Center, two-time presenter at the National C
