Cardinal men claim third national title! Congratulations!

The Cardinal men’s track and field team claimed the final jewel of a rare triple crown May 29 as the team protected a huge early lead and won the program’s 20th national title at the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships. The victory makes North Central just the second team in Division III history to sweep the national cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field championships in one academic year.

Parker Gadbois ’09, who majored in English and minored in Chinese and secondary education, was named a Fulbright Scholar and will teach English in Taiwan. He was awarded the highly prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) Award for 2010-2011 and begins his 11-month assignment on Aug. 1 with $30,000 of support and additional funds for language study. Gadbois teaches English at East Aurora High School in Aurora and sees the Fulbright as a way to both share his love of teaching and improve his Chinese skills and cultural knowledge.

Ryan Pier ’11, sports director for WONC-FM 89.1, received a nomination for Best Sportscaster (in a small market) from the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) and is one of three vying for this Silver Dome Award. His competition includes sports reporters from two commercial stations: WKAN in Kankakee and WRMJ in Aledo. Piers produced a sports story that aired on WONC featuring the basketball prowess of the Raridon family. He will attend the IBA awards ceremony June 16 in Normal, Ill., where he’ll learn the winner.

Emily Albright '10 has been awarded a 2010 National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship. Albright, a biochemistry major from Naperville, can apply the portable financial award toward a graduate school of her choosing. While at North Central, she's honed her research skills while working with such faculty as Jonathan Visick, associate professor of biology, and Stephen Johnston, Roger and Nadeane Hruby Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Mock Trial team makes "serious noise" against top teams

When seven members of North Central’s Mock Trial team advanced to compete in the American Mock Trial Association 2010 national tournament March 12-14, they didn’t know they’d be facing the top teams in the entire country. Team members tried legal cases against the Universities of Minnesota, Michigan, Chicago and Notre Dame and finished the tournament with a 3-5 record, missing a bid to the National Championship Tournament in April.

Weien Wang ’11, a biology major, is taking full advantage of North Central’s interdisciplinary approach to liberal arts education. He will represent the College when he reads his poetry at the 11th annual Citywide Undergraduate Poetry Festival April 1 at Columbia College Chicago. Only one student from each of the 11 participating colleges and universities is invited to read his or her work at the festival.

Winning three events and scoring in three more, the North Central College men's track & field team was crowned National Champions on March 13 with its first Indoor National Title since 1989, besting a field of more than 65 institutions. Presenting academic work at an international convention in St. Louis is how one student will spend her spring break. Sarah Kurpiel ’10, majoring in English literature and French, will present her paper titled “Where’s Antonio Then?: Locating the Inclusions and Exclusions of Antonio in Two Film Versions of Twelfth Night” at the Sigma Tau Delta 2010 International Convention in St. Louis March 17-20.

The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its 2010 Men’s Indoor Track & Field Midwest Region Award winners March 10 with three of the four award winners from North Central. Al Carius was honored as the Head Coach of the Year, Tim Winder was named Assistant Coach of the Year while pole vaulter Jake Winder ’10 was selected as the Field A

For the second time in four years, North Central will send a four-man delegation to the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships, the most the Cardinals have ever sent to the event in a single year. While the road to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is a well-worn path for one member of the group, the other three will make their initial trips after traveling very different routes to this point. One of the most decorated wrestlers in North Central’s history, Gabe Youel ’10 (photo) is making his fourth and final appearance
