Brian Hoffert, associate professor of religious studies and history and coordinator of East Asian studies, presented a paper titled “Beyond Life and Death: The Great Awakening” at the Conference on Daoist Ways of Thought in Zhengzhou, China, on March 25, 2010. He also gave a presentation on “The Daoist Roots of Zen Humor” at the DuPage Valley Social Studies Conference in Wheaton, Ill., on Feb. 26, 2010. Hoffert will be doing research on Japanese religious pilgrimages this fall and will host the Midwest Conference on Chinese Thought at DePaul University in Chicago April 2011.

Gerald Gems, professor of health and physical education, was offered a position as consultant on curriculum and instruction matters during his visiting professorship at Beijing Sports University in June. He also traveled to Antalya, Turkey, where he gave a presentation titled “Sport and the Social Construction of American Masculinity” at the 15th annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science June 23-26.

Eddie Rogers ’00 is a singer at heart who knows his Chinese, which he learned at North Central. He competed in China’s version of American Idol—Super Boy 2010, a reality singing contest produced by Hunan TV to find the next male singing sensation in China. Audience voting advanced him to the next round, which was quite a feat considering the other winners were Chinese and Rogers is an African-American who has perfect Chinese diction, thanks to his North Central Chinese instructor Annie Liu, who was also present at the event.

North Central welcomes Huang Ping, the Consul General of the People's Republic of China to Chicago, to speak Wednesday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Koten Chapel. He will discuss the state of China today. His talk is free, open to the public and co-sponsored by the College’s Office of Development and Corporate Relations and Cultural Events.

Members of the Central Chinese Television (CCTV) Operas Channel in Beijing were on campus Jan. 11 to meet with and videotape an interview with President Hal Wilde and a classroom in intermediate Chinese taught by Annie Liu, adjunct instructor of Chinese. CCTV plans to use the footage in a program that will air throughout China during the Chinese New Year’s festivities in February.
