Stephen Maynard Caliendo, associate professor of political science, and Charlton McIlwain of New York University were awarded a grant of approximately $21,000 from Time-Sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences (TESS) and funded by National Science Foundation for their project, “The Effects of Racial and Racist Appeals on White Voters.” Their study is designed to ascertain how anti-black racial appeals and black candidate appeals to racial authenticity affect white potential voters’ perception of both black and white candidates.

Stephen Maynard Caliendo, associate professor of political science, and Charlton McIlwain, co-directors of The Project on Race in Political Communication (RaceProject.org), presented “Talking about Race in the Obama Era” at Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY, on Nov. 9. The multimedia presentation focused on how to recognize and understand the ways that latent fears and resentments can be manifested and perpetuated by language and images.
