Wulfers—a 1968 graduate of North Central College who was born in Berlin, Germany—is among the leading female minimalist and conceptual artists of her time, author Daniel Tiffany wrote in the July 13 edition of Hypoallergic magazine. The publication bears the motto “Sensitive To Art & Its Discontents.”

Teach First—which aims to recruit and retain first-generation college students who want to become teachers—was launched at North Central in 2008. Six years later it’s serving as a model for Cardinal First that launches in fall 2014.

North Central College education alumna Mavis DeMar ’79 has been named to a newly created administrative post in East Aurora School District 131.

DeMar was promoted from her position as principal of Hermes Elementary School in Aurora. In her new role she will oversee a collaborative program between East Aurora and North Central College to prepare future principals.

North Central College has welcomed three new members to its Board of Trustees: Kathryn Birkett of Geneva and Naperville residents Robin Boren and Thomas Harter Sr.

Birkett has served as superintendent of schools for Indian Prairie School District 204 since July 2009. She retires in June after dedicating more than three decades to the district, including serving as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and assistant deputy superintendent.

A new program at North Central College is challenging young minds by giving youngsters their first exposure to advanced mathematical concepts.

The program is called the Expository Engagement (E2) Math Circle, and it’s modeled after similar successful programs held across the country. The American Mathematical Association provided a $6,000 grant to fund the program.

North Central College names Marty Sauer and Kimberly Sluis to vice president positions

North Central College has named Marty Sauer and Kimberly Sluis as vice presidents, effective Feb. 1.

North Central College has named Marty Sauer as vice president for enrollment management and athletics and Kimberly Sluis ’99 as vice president for student affairs and dean of students.

Sauer is the College’s dean of admission and financial aid and Sluis is dean of students. The promotions are effective Feb. 1, the day Laurie Hamen, North Central College vice president for enrollment management, athletics and student affairs, begins serving as the ninth president of Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
