North Central students dig into Frozen Assets

D-Term Verandah course gives students opportunities to explore the culture and history of locally made frozen treats.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! North Central College students investigated the history and business behind this cold dessert as part of a D-Term Verandah course, Frozen Assets.

This frozen treat dates back to 3000 B.C. in Asian cultures, when it was discovered crushed ice could be combined with flavorings for dessert. Since then, the treat evolved through the centuries into a popular sweet option for all ages.

North Central students gain access, networking opportunities in PR field

New Verandah course takes students behind the scenes at Chicago’s leading public relations firms, gives opportunities to network and explore career options.

“It’s all about finding a career that fits you,” said Skylar Krople ’17 after attending the Publicity Club of Chicago PR Career Day with her North Central College classmates. “I learned there are lots of opportunities to create whatever you want because the public relations industry is constantly changing.”

North Central celebrates Hispanic and Latino cultural heritage on campus

North Central College invites multicultural involvement on campus with a series of events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

North Central College’s multicultural life on campus is expanding this fall to incorporate a larger celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Though the College promotes many other Hispanic and Latino involvement opportunities throughout the academic year, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 is devoted to a campus-wide celebration of various Hispanic cultures.

Bruce Janacek, associate professor of history, discussed the kings of England with Milt Rosenberg and a Northwestern University professor on WCGO-AM 1590.

Bruce Janacek, North Central College associate professor of history, appeared on Milt Rosenberg’s radio show Sept. 18 on WCGO-AM 1590.

For the fourth time in five years, The Chronicle of Higher Education has named North Central College a “Great College To Work For.”

For the fourth time in five years, The Chronicle of Higher Education  has named North Central College a “Great College To Work For.”

North Central College is among just 86 institutions nationwide recognized in The Chronicle’s eighth annual report on The Academic Workplace. The recognition is based on results of surveys of more than 44,000 employees at 281 colleges and universities.

Manilyn Gumapas ’18 receives Mark A. Reid First-Year Leadership Award during North Central College’s 2015 Honors Convocation.

Manilyn Gumapas ’18, daughter of Emmanuel and Erlyn Gumapas of Elgin, was awarded the Mark A. Reid First-Year Leadership Award during Honors Day in May at North Central College.

Manilyn is majoring in sociology: community studies at North Central College. She is a graduate of Central High School.

Graduate student, alumnus selected for prestigious Prague Summer Program

Rebecca Samson ’12/M ’15 has been selected for a Prague Summer Program, a one-month creative-writing residency in the Czech Republic.

Rebecca Samson ’12/M ’15 has been selected for a prestigious Prague Summer Program, a one-month creative-writing residency in the Czech Republic.

Samson also was awarded one of a few competitive Vaclav Havel scholarships. Samson studied German as an undergraduate and is completing a Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) in the Writing, Editing and Publishing track.

She grew up in a Czech household and her passion for Czech history and culture was strengthened after a family trip to Prague in 2011.
