Jack Shindler, professor of English and director of international programs, and Kimberly Larsson, assistant to the director of international programs, gave presentations at the Association of International Educators (NAFSA) Conference June 1-4, in Kansas City, Mo. Some 7,000 educators attended worldwide. Shindler was chosen from among 11 other presenters nationwide to give his session at the international conference.


Students serve summer long, around the world

From San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, to Nairobi, Kenya, to San Pablo City in the Philippines, North Central students wiill travel to do service projects.

Each summer, students at North Central College head to places around the world to serve alongside nonprofit organizations and people in disadvantaged communities. This summer, they'll work in three communities in Mexico, Kenya and the Philippines.

Associate Professor Thomas Williams was awarded emeritus status at Commencement June 12 and named Associate Professor of Biology Emeritus. Williams came to North Central in 1981 from Washington State University, where he received a doctorate in zoology. His expertise in zoology focused on salamander anti-predator mechanisms and he ignited a passion for scientific research in his students by including them in his laboratory and field projects, conference presentations and publishing.

Associate professor awarded emeritus status at North Central's Commencement ceremonies.

Retiring North Central College associate professor Thomas Williams was awarded emeritus status at North Central's Commencement ceremonies on June 12. A resident of Naperville, he was named Associate Professor of Biology Emeritus.

Williams came to North Central College in 1981 from Washington State University, where he received a doctorate in zoology. He earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Willamette University and master's in biology from Drake University.

Susan Mack, visiting instructor of education, and new graduates Sandy Moller ’10 and Jessica Mateo ’10 were co-presenters of a workshop titled “Preparing Teachers for Diversity in Classroom Management” at ACI’s Center for Success in High-Need Schools Summer Institute for Educators on June 18 at Trinity Christian College. Moller was the 2010 Outstanding Major in Spanish at North Central’s 2010 Honors Convocation and Mateo graduated with a degree in elementary education.

Each June after Commencement, Robert Moussetis, associate professor of international business, takes students on a trip abroad. This year, he and 20 others will visit Italy from June 13 to 23 with a goal of seeing as many sites and experiencing as much culture, art, architecture, history and current challenges as possible during their visit. They will travel to Venice, Florence (photo), Rome, Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi and the island of Capri. Often called the “travelin’ man,” Moussetis loves to travel and has led many D-Term and summer trips abroad.

Director of Athletics Jim Miller received the Harold and Eva White First Citizen of the College Award during the College’s Commencement exercises June 12. In presenting the award to Miller, President Harold R. Wilde said, “Jim has helped shape this institution in many important ways. … His energy and passion for North Central have helped inspire our recent successes in football, baseball and wrestling and our national championships in cross country and track and field.

Christopher Smith of Oak Lawn, Ill., son of Richard and Nanette Smith and a graduate of Oak Lawn Community High School, was named the 2010 recipient of the Mark A. Reid Student Leadership Award during North Central College's Commencement exercises on June 12.

Naperville resident and Director of Athletics Jim Miller was named the 19th recipient of the Harold and Eva White First Citizen of the College Award during North Central College's Commencement exercises on June 12.

The First Citizen of the College Award recognizes a student, faculty or staff member who exemplifies the best of North Central College and honors a "unique spirit and legacy," that of Harold and Eva White, longtime editors and publishers of The Naperville Sun and alumni of the College.
