North Central College alumna Stephanie Theis ’05 Hawkins, a second-grade teacher at Lynne Thigpen Elementary School in Joliet, Ill., was recognized for her teaching with a 2012-2013 Milken Educator Award.

A school-wide assembly was called on April 12, and students and teachers were told it would feature a member of the Illinois State Board of Education. What Hawkins did not realize, however, was that she would be presented with the Milken Educator Award for excellence in the education profession.

At the American Forensic Association National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET) held April 5-8 at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, North Central’s team placed the highest ever—13th of 78 teams, with individuals ranking in top positions. To date, the highest placement for the team at the AFA-NIET competition was 15th in 1999.

North Central College’s student-run radio station WONC-FM 89.1 began streaming live online via iHeartRadio.com and through the iHeartRadio mobile app on April 7. WONC is one of only eight college radio stations in the United States the company chose to be part of its streaming services.

North Central College will launch full-time intensive English language program for international students this September.

North Central College will begin offering a full-time, intensive English language program through its new English Language Institute (ELI) in September. ELI is designed to prepare international students for admission to North Central or to another U.S. college or university by developing academic, professional and social English language skills.

Eighteen North Central College students were among some 200 forensic competitors in speech and debate at the Illinois Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Tournament (IIFA), hosted by Northern Illinois University March 1-2.

North Central College brought home 12 awards. Among them were two Sweepstakes Awards: The College won Third Place Team award in the State of Illinois, and David DePino ’13, majoring in speech communication and history, claimed Third Place Overall Individual Student in Illinois award.

Spring break opens opportunities for service, travel, learning

When North Central College takes its break between winter and spring terms, students will travel nationwide on nine different service and academic trips.

When North Central College takes its weeklong break between winter and spring terms, some 70 students plus faculty and staff members will leave campus and travel nationwide on nine different service and academic trips. In addition, the men’s baseball and women’s softball teams head south for competition.

Among the construction service trips are five Habitat for Humanity trips. The Office of Ministry and Service is coordinating three trips to Alabama, Michigan and Tennessee, and student-athletes have organized two trips to South Carolina and Florida.

Entrepreneurs Jeremy Markham ’15 and Kyler Juckins ’15 are the creators of DinnDinn, a smart phone app for food lovers. DinnDinn works like a virtual refrigerator. Users upload photos of food, drinks and other items to their page and rate them. Their friends and followers, known as “taste buds,” can comment on the posts.

North Central College students will showcase their original research in biology, chemistry, psychology, literature, the arts and other fields at the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in April.

NCUR has accepted 32 proposals by 34 North Central students for presentation at its annual conference. NCUR promotes research, scholarship and creative activity in all fields of study and accepts only top submissions by undergraduate students.

Thirteen North Central College broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1, the College’s student-run radio station, earned 26 nominations in the annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) competition. Winners of the Golden Microphone Trophy Awards will be announced March 2 at the 73rd Annual IBS International Radio/Webcast Conference in New York City.
