Hemlata Mistry ’05 passion for Korea earns a Fulbright

Hemlata Mistry ’05 watches news reports about North Korea with a special fascination. She developed an academic passion for the Korean culture and language while at North Central, and now her hard work and advanced studies have resulted in a prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA). She will begin the orientation process in July and then receive an assignment to teach English in South Korea while engaging in cultural exchange programs and furthering her own Korean language studies.

Field Museum internship leads to scholarship for North Central College anthropology major

North Central College anthropology major Jessica Pantel of Beach Park, Ill., has been awarded the College’s 2012 Gloria Levitt Scholarship for Anthropology.

May 8, 2012—North Central College anthropology major Jessica Pantel of Beach Park, Ill., has been awarded the College’s 2012 Gloria Levitt Scholarship for Anthropology.

Pantel, a junior, interned with The Field Museum in Chicago during winter term and was awarded the $1,000 scholarship for her work with the museum. The award was announced May 1 when Gloria Levitt, associate registrar in The Field Museum’s Department of Anthropology, hosted a talk at North Central about career opportunities in sociology and anthropology.

2012 Goldwater Scholar, Maria Gommel

Maria Gommel ’13 has been named a 2012 Goldwater Scholar, the highest national undergraduate award for achievement in math, science and engineering. Gommel is majoring in actuarial science and mathematics and intends to pursue a doctorate in mathematics after graduation.

North Central College student Emily Schmidt participated in the 13th annual Citywide Undergraduate Poetry Festival in Chicago.

The festival was held April 5 at Columbia College Chicago and featured the talents of 12 poets from Chicago-area colleges and universities who read their own original works. Participating institutions included DePaul University, Northwestern University and the University of Chicago.

Building on Momentum: Scholarships

Cody Follis ’13 is pursuing his dream of becoming a lawyer and politician, participating in forensics while studying political science. Merissa Burnett ’13 wants to go into law enforcement and works at Campus Safety. Alexandra Williams ’13 is furthering her passion for music by majoring in jazz studies and plans on graduate school to become a professor of music.

For third straight year, a record number of students will represent North Central College at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR).

For the third consecutive year, a record number of students from North Central College will participate in the nation’s leading conference on undergraduate research.

Forty-five students will represent North Central at the annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) March 29-31 at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. No other college or university in Illinois will send more students to this prestigious conference.

As the Cardinals advance in the NCAA Division III football playoffs, players are showing their support for the Thornes by playing with shaved heads in a show of solidarity with their coach. Kathie Thorne, who has attended games this season in Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a treatable but incurable form of blood cancer.
