North Central College will launch full-time intensive English language program for international students this September.

North Central College will begin offering a full-time, intensive English language program through its new English Language Institute (ELI) in September. ELI is designed to prepare international students for admission to North Central or to another U.S. college or university by developing academic, professional and social English language skills.

North Central College senior Etienne Mashuli has been awarded a prestigious Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, which he will apply to graduate school. Mashuli is considering graduate programs at Yale University, the University of Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins University but his choice is undecided.

Eighteen North Central College students were among some 200 forensic competitors in speech and debate at the Illinois Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Tournament (IIFA), hosted by Northern Illinois University March 1-2.

North Central College brought home 12 awards. Among them were two Sweepstakes Awards: The College won Third Place Team award in the State of Illinois, and David DePino ’13, majoring in speech communication and history, claimed Third Place Overall Individual Student in Illinois award.

Medical mission inspires North Central pre-health majors

Four North Central College pre-health majors journey to Honduras for a medical mission.

Morgan Wichman ’14 always wanted to travel to Honduras with an optometrist from her hometown of Freeport, IL, for a medical mission. She decided this was the year to take a week in February for the mission—if she could find friends to travel with. It didn’t take long for three North Central friends to say “I’m in” and make plans for the World Gospel Outreach-sponsored trip.

Spring break opens opportunities for service, travel, learning

When North Central College takes its break between winter and spring terms, students will travel nationwide on nine different service and academic trips.

When North Central College takes its weeklong break between winter and spring terms, some 70 students plus faculty and staff members will leave campus and travel nationwide on nine different service and academic trips. In addition, the men’s baseball and women’s softball teams head south for competition.

Among the construction service trips are five Habitat for Humanity trips. The Office of Ministry and Service is coordinating three trips to Alabama, Michigan and Tennessee, and student-athletes have organized two trips to South Carolina and Florida.

While the Super Bowl may already be a distant memory for many, 15 members of North Central’s Sport Management Association (SMA) are still pinching themselves as they recall rubbing elbows with sports celebrities and gaining admission to the country’s most popular sporting event, held this year in New Orleans.

“I had goosebumps the entire time I was in the Superdome,” says Matt Meindl  ’14, a management and sport management double major. “And experiencing New Orleans’ culture was also a thrill of a lifetime.”

Two North Central College students have developed a mobile app for friends to share pictures of food they like.

Entrepreneurs Jeremy Markham ’15 and Kyler Juckins ’15 are the creators of DinnDinn, a smart phone app for food lovers. DinnDinn works like a virtual refrigerator. Users upload photos of food, drinks and other items to their page and rate them. Their friends and followers, known as “taste buds,” can comment on the posts.

Project by North Central College psychology major Kristen Soforic ’13 is accepted for presentation at regional conference, wins research award.

Kristen Soforic ’13, a psychology major at North Central College, was recently recognized for her academic work. Her research project, titled “The Effect of Induced Hypocrisy on Texting While Driving,” was accepted for presentation at the 2013 Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA) conference in May in Chicago. She co-authored the project with North Central 2012 graduate Nicholas Petkunas, also a psychology major.

North Central College student broadcasters are nominated for 26 awards in a national competition—more than any other college or university radio station in the nation.

Thirteen North Central College broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1, the College’s student-run radio station, earned 26 nominations in the annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) competition. Winners of the Golden Microphone Trophy Awards will be announced March 2 at the 73rd Annual IBS International Radio/Webcast Conference in New York City.
