North Central College invites public to free presentation on benefits of learning Chinese

North Central College invites the public to a free presentation Nov. 2 on the benefits of learning the Chinese language.

The presentation, “Why Chinese?” will feature three guest speakers who speak fluent Chinese and who are Chicago-area managers of international business operations. The presentation will be particularly beneficial to high school and college-aged students considering Chinese studies, and for adults considering learning to use Chinese in their careers.

North Central College’s Japan Club invites the community to take a walk through its Japanese Haunted House on campus Halloween night, Oct. 31.

North Central College’s Japan Club will host its first-ever Japanese Haunted House experience for the campus community on Halloween night, Oct. 31.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, in North Central’s Harold and Eva White Activities Center, 325 E. Benton Ave. Visitors are welcome to come and go anytime during the evening hours.

North Central College’s chapter of the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) hosted a demonstration day as part of its National Chemistry Week activities Thursday, Oct. 20.

Louis Waldmeir, a North Central College junior, is studying abroad in Heidelberg, Germany, and working at an organic German brewery at an old monastery.

Louis Waldmeir, a North Central College junior, is living, studying and working in Heidelberg, Germany, through mid-December. He’s taking classes in German at the Universitat Heidelberg—one of the 50-plus study abroad programs North Central offers its students—and working at an organic German brewery as part of an internship.

Waldmeir is majoring in German and minoring in history of ideas at North Central and is a resident of Dubuque, Iowa.

The Illinois State Board of Education has named North Central alumnus Josh Stumpenhorst recipient of the 2011-2012 Illinois Teacher of the Year Award.

Oct. 24, 2011—North Central College alumnus Josh Stumpenhorst is the 2011-2012 Illinois Teacher of the Year.

Stumpenhorst earned his undergraduate degree in social science and secondary education at North Central College. He teaches language arts and social science to sixth-graders at Lincoln Junior High School in Naperville Community Unit School District 203. He credits his experience at North Central for helping him achieve success as an educator.

North Central College’s new chemical microscopy degree is featured in a two-page spread in the Oct. 17 issue of Chemical & Engineering News, a journal of the American Chemical Society.

The article describes how North Central College is offering the nation’s first four-year degree in chemical microscopy through a partnership with Hooke College of Applied Sciences in Westmont.

North Central College’s Storm Styles, a human resource management and psychology major, lands internship in human resources with Porsche at Lisle office.

North Central College student Storm Styles is interning in human resources at the Lisle, Ill., office of Porsche Business Services, a division of the company that makes the legendary sports car.

Styles, of Lemont, is a junior double-majoring in human resource management and psychology. Working primarily with three other members of the HR staff, her duties have included assisting with an internal newsletter, working with international interns from Germany and organizing staff events.
