North Central College alumna NeAngela Marshall delivered an inspiring address about the power of words to students, faculty, staff and guests at the College’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. prayer breakfast Jan. 20.

Marshall graduated from North Central in 2004 with a major in organizational communication and went on to earn a law degree. She is an assistant state’s attorney in the Domestic Violence Division of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, where she handles prosecutions related to crimes of sexual violence and child abuse.

Alumni of North Central College’s master of arts in education program are named principals of suburban high schools with reputations for academic excellence.

Two alumni of North Central College’s master of arts in education (MAEd) program are assuming leadership positions at suburban Chicago high schools with reputations for academic excellence.

Brian Waterman is the new principal of Lyons Township High School in LaGrange while Mark Kolkman is becoming principal of Hinsdale Central High School. Both earned their master’s degrees in educational leadership at North Central College, Waterman in 2004 and Kolkman in 2002. Both positions are effective with the start of the 2014-2015 school year.

Classrooms in the Valley View School District school “adopt” a college or university and learn about that institution as a way of encouraging college readiness. Educators are introducing younger children to higher education to get them thinking about college early, so they can plan their studies accordingly and graduate high school prepared to pursue their academic careers.

Total enrollment stands at 3,048 undergraduate and graduate students, eclipsing the 3,000 mark for the second straight year. The College welcomed 852 new full-time undergraduate students. Enrollment this fall includes a record number of international students and increased representation of out-of-state students and veterans.

The Teacher Leader degree or endorsement is designed for teachers who have a professional education license and want to pursue additional leadership training and responsibilities. Educators who earn a Teacher Leader degree or endorsement may pursue positions as a mentor or coach, lead curriculum standards committees, serve as department or grade-level chairs, lead school improvement initiatives and serve on school leadership teams.

Alumna's family scrapbook unveils ancestors’ deep connections to North Central College

Caitlin Schlorff recently discovered a scrapbook that revealed a fourth generation of her family’s connections to North Central College.

Caitlin “Cait” Neuman ’11 Schlorff recalls the moment when a simple request by her grandmother suddenly unearthed a treasure trove of her ancestors’ deep connections to North Central College.

They were at the family’s cabin near Eagle River, Wis., when Cait’s grandmother, Bonnie Erffmeyer ’54 McLaughlin, asked her to retrieve something from a closet. That’s where Cait discovered a scrapbook created by her maternal great-grandfather.

“My grandma had me looking for a hummingbird feeder and this scrapbook was on the top shelf,” she recalls.
