Community Development

The Community Development: Planning Housing and Social Justice course explores the role of place and social justice in community development, primarily in cities and particularly as it relates to issues of housing and city planning.

This course will provide an understanding of history of community development and central issues, an ability to analyze community development plans, especially in relation to justice issues, and an understanding of central ethical and public service issues in relation to community development. This course will cover how location still matters, regionalisms, roots of federal housing policy, federal housing policy in post-war America, Chicago during the 1940s to 1950s, Chicago’s public housing in 1960s to 1990s, and a field trip to housing sites in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Coursework may include weekly journals, a book review and research papers.
