Why choose English at North Central College?

Using language effectively—reading deeply and writing clearly—are skills necessary for a wide range of careers. As you read historical and contemporary literary texts, you’ll reflect upon global issues and consider connections across disciplines. You can learn about the value of writing to public debate and civic life through courses like Writing for Social Change. As a Writing Center tutor and as a writer or editor for the award-winning student newspaper The Chronicle, student humor magazine The Kindling and student literary magazine North Central Review, you'll gain valuable practical experience. And you’ll top it off by collecting and reflecting upon your best work in a senior portfolio class.

You can also:

  • Choose to concentrate in literature, writing or journalism.
  • Work toward your teaching certification by minoring in secondary education.
  • Join the Sigma Tau Delta English honor society.
  • Combine English with other majors, like political science, to prepare for graduate or law school.
  • Apply for a Richter Independent Study Fellowship grant to research abroad and present your results at local and national academic conferences.

Laurel White

English: writing major

The College Scholars program, robust study abroad programs, and variety of research grants attracted Laurel to North Central. Once here, she took advantage of every opportunity. Interested in public policy journalism, she traveled to London to study British impressions of the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. She attended a taping of the “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” to research the culture of political satire. And she presented the results of both projects at the National Conferences for Undergraduate Research.

Co-editor-in-chief of North Central’s student newspaper, The Chronicle, Laurel landed a spot at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. She also won a highly competitive Dunn Fellowship to work for one year in the Governor of Illinois’ Press Office in Springfield, IL. “The Dunn Fellowship is an excellent learning opportunity, which wouldn't have been possible without the encouragement and support of North Central faculty,” she says. “I am lucky to have had a group of excellent professors to support and encourage me throughout the application process and my entire academic career.”

Kira Simeone

English

During a transfer visit day at North Central College, Kira realized she found the right place to finish her degree. “I remember experiencing the college tour, but the standout part of the day was talking to knowledgeable people from the different departments and offices. I was so impressed when I met with the financial aid representative because I felt other schools weren’t interested in helping a nontraditional student like me afford a quality education.”

Other factors for choosing North Central were location, liberal arts curriculum and knowledgeable faculty.  “The school had an amazing reputation and cared about each of the students.”

Kira developed strong relationships with many English professors. “I knew I could talk to any of them at any time, and they were always helpful and available. I couldn’t have made it through without their support. But now, here I am, the first person in my immediate family to get a bachelor’s degree and I’m so grateful.”
