Wilders and Van Oyen publish article on symmetry of math and art

Lawrence Van Oyen (photo, right), professor of music, and Richard Wilders (left), Marie and Bernice Gantzert Professor in the Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of mathematics, had their co-authored article, “Turning Students into Symmetry Detectives,” published in the September issue of Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, a publication of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The article discusses how the mathematical concept of symmetry can be used to analyze certain kinds of art.

North Central College on Sept. 28 will premiere of the second part of a documentary produced with NCTV17 that chronicles the College’s 150-year history.

North Central College invites the public to the free premiere Sept. 28 of the second part of a documentary series produced with Naperville Community Television that chronicles the College’s 150-year history.

“The Growth of a College” is the second of the five-part documentary series “A Promising Start,” which commemorates the College’s Sesquicentennial. “The Growth of a College” will premiere at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, in Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

McMahon leads workshop at school in Chicago

Mary McMahon—associate professor of mathematics and mathematics education coordinator—co-facilitated a workshop titled “Teaching Mathematics Using the Common Core Standards: What’s Really Changed?” to the staff at Goldblatt Elementary School in Chicago on Sept. 2.  

Darrin Vogt, education certification student who completed his certification at North Central College in 2010, was a participant and is in his second year of teaching physical education at Goldblatt.

Macek has article published in new anthology

Steve Macek, associate professor of speech communication and coordinator of urban and suburban studies, had his article titled “The Reporter’s Rebellion: ‘The Chicago Journalism Review’ 1968-1975” published in a new anthology about communication history, “A Moment of Danger: Critical Studies in the History of U.S. Communication Since World War II.” The 2011 anthology is edited by Janice Peck & Inger L. Stole and published by the University of Marquette Press. Macek’s article is Chapter 11 in the book.

Hundreds of North Central College student-athletes from all 22 men’s and women’s athletic teams gathered in the Residential Hall/Recreation Center Thursday, Sept. 15, for the College’s eighth annual Huddle.

This year’s keynote speaker was 1986 graduate Ed Mathey. Mathey told the student-athletes the importance of leadership and relationships and their influence on success, while also sharing anecdotes from his experiences as a baseball coach.

New this fall, a green chemistry course will focus on the design of chemical products and processes that eliminate the use of hazardous substances.

This fall North Central is offering a green chemistry course for the first time. Paul Brandt, professor of chemistry and chair of chemistry and physics, will be teaching the CHM 430 Special Topics: Green Chemistry course, which focuses on the design of chemical products and processes that eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances.
