North Central College kicks off yearlong focus on human rights with lecture by Woodrow Wilson Scholar and human rights advocate Alexander Wilde Oct. 13.

North Central College welcomes human rights advocate Alexander Wilde, a senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., to its campus Oct. 13 for a free lecture on human rights.

Wilde will present “Religious Wellsprings of Human Rights: Latin America” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in the College’s theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St., Naperville.

North Central College broadcasting alum Ray Odom returns to rock radio on WRXQ

Ray Odom, a 1997 graduate of North Central College, has joined WRXQ-FM 100.7 as host of an evening show on the Coal City-based rock station.

Oct. 12, 2011—Ray Odom, a 1997 graduate of North Central College, has joined WRXQ-FM 100.7 as host of an evening show on the Coal City-based rock station.

Odom, better known as “Crazy Ray,” was featured on Chicagoland Radio and Media, which recounted Odom’s previous tenure as overnight host on “The Loop,” WLUP-FM 97.9.

Gregory H. Wolf, professor of German, presented a paper, titled “Articulation, Advocacy, Outreach, and Program Building: German Studies at a Small Liberal Arts College”; and organized and moderated a panel discussion, “German and German Studies: Reelections on the Past and Visions for the Future,” at the 35th annual conference of the German Studies Association. The meeting was held Sept. 22-25 in Louisville, Ky.

Installation of new way-finding, building identification, house address and campus map signs will begin in October.

The College’s maintenance staff will remove the existing building signs and install newly designed signs in front of campus buildings (photo). In addition, pedestrian way-finding signs will be added at 10 locations throughout campus and “you are here” campus map signs will be added in six locations. Campus houses will soon receive updated street address signs.

The performance is a multimedia experience that explores our place in the cosmos. The concert is the second event in Chicago Sinfonietta’s 2011-2012 season, its first season to feature North Central College as its new west suburban home.

North Central College’s own Jeanne Bortolini, secretary at Oesterle Library, took the stage Saturday, Oct. 8, to sing vocals with the legendary rock and roll band Chicago.

“It was surreal! A dream come true that happens once in a lifetime,” she says.

It happened in Lantz Arena at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston as part of the band’s Sing with Chicago promotion that gives fans the chance to win a VIP fan experience and help raise funds and awareness to end breast cancer.

Oct. 10, 2011—Lauren Visher, a 2007 alumna of North Central College, is featured in The Naperville Sun for her work with Naper Settlement.

Visher spoke about her work as part of The Sun’s “Five Questions” feature. She said as a young girl, she enjoyed volunteering at the Settlement and giving tours. She graduated from Naperville Central High School and majored in musical theatre at North Central.

North Central College honors Peace Corps administrator with Outstanding Alumni Award

North Central College is honoring Esther Benjamin, associate director for global operations for the Peace Corps, with a 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award.

This is the second of five weekly installments profiling individuals who will receive Alumni Awards & Recognition on Nov. 11 during North Central College’s Sesquicentennial Homecoming Celebration.
