Musical theatre alumna and father team up to win adventure reality series

Musical theatre alumna Andrea Larson ’10 Musselman and her father teamed up to win the new adventure series "Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls.”

A new summer reality competition series called “Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls” provided some daunting physical and mental challenges for North Central College alumna Andrea Larson ’10 Musselman, a musical theatre major.

More comfortable as a performer on stage, Musselman found herself on camera in New Zealand with mountains as the backdrop for her latest role. She and her dad, Andrew, dubbed “Lucky,” emerged as the winners of the inaugural season of the survival reality show and received a $500,000 grand prize.

Monica Vuksanovich (photo, left), North Central College visiting assistant professor of Spanish, and Karin Duncker-Hoffmann (right), instructor of ESL (English as a second language), coauthored the article, “Writing with English Language Learners: Advice for Training Writing Center Tutors.” It was published in the Summer 2013 issue of ITBE Link, the quarterly publication by the Illinois Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages-Bilingual Education (ITBE).

Karl Kelley, North Central College professor of psychology and director of FYE, wrote a chapter titled “Differential Aptitude Testing,” which has been published in the 6th edition of “A Counselor’s Guide to Career Assessment Instruments” (2013) by editors Chris Wood and Danica G. Hays. Kelley also was a contributor in the 5th edition.

INROADS partnership earns high praise

North Central College was honored with a University Partner Award by INROADS, which selects students from underserved groups for prestigious internships.

INROADS—a  program that selects and places student interns representing underserved groups—has honored North Central College with a University Partner Award for the Great Lakes Region. There are 72 colleges and universities in the region, including most Big 10 universities, the University of Chicago, DePaul University and others.

Accepting on behalf of the College were Lisa Pettaway, director of the North Central College Fund and coordinator of the program for North Central, and Dorothy Pleas, director of multicultural affairs.
