Millennial Entrepreneurs: Catherine Borzym ’11

A flair for design and business preparation as an undergraduate continue to inspire growth of the Kiwi Avenue jewelry business that Catherine Borzym ’11 started as a North Central student.

“I first began designing customized jewelry in high school for my friends going to prom,” says Borzym, who majored in marketing and entrepreneurship and small business management. “In 2008, my sophomore year at North Central, I incorporated my business.”

Millennial Entrepreneurs: Creating Their Own Niche

With the support of faculty, ever-evolving technologies, creative ideas and new emerging funding sources, young millennial entrepreneurs are finding ways to create their own niche in the business world. And many are gaining important lessons in entrepreneurship outside the parameters of economics and business, in North Central courses in theatre, anthropology, computer science, art and more.

Millennial Entrepreneurs: Michael Wenger and Bret Bonnet 10 Years Later

In June 2004, the North Central Now ran the story, “Coleman loan launches virtual entrepreneurs.” Nearly 10 years later, the company founded at North Central by then-students Michael Wenger ‘04 (pictured left) and business partner Bret Bonnet ‘05 has been hugely successful. The two entrepreneurs founded Quality Logo Products with a web address and a toll-free number to sell promotional products and ad specialty items.

An entrepreneurial mindset means never being satisfied with today’s status quo and always thinking about what’s next, says Scott Palmer ’08, who majored in marketing at North Central. “I’m a builder, I’m always looking to build something,” he says. “And then I want to continue on and build something else.”

Millennial Entrepreneurs: Molly Christine ’13

A cashier’s job with Chartwells and a love of baking have forged a creative career start in the baking and catering business for Molly Christine ’13. Her talents resulted in Chartwells (the College’s food service provider) introducing the Molly’s Bakery brand, which identifies her cookies, cakes and popular cake pops that have been sold on campus during the past year. Starting in September, she will be a full-time employee of Chartwells, expanding upon the product line she bakes in the Kaufman Dining Hall bakery.

George Blanchet, North Central College percussion instructor and lecturer in music, and Dan O’Connell, French horn instructor and lecturer in music, were part of a successful European tour, June 15-23, with the chamber orchestra Camerata Chicago. The Chicago-based orchestra performed under the leadership of Maestro Drostan Hall in the cities of Prague, the Czech Republic; Paris, Tulle and Marseille, France; and Milan, Italy.

North Central College is offering a new Teacher Leader program leading to a master’s degree in education or state endorsement for educators.

North Central College is offering a new Teacher Leader program leading to a master’s degree in education or state endorsement for educators.

The Teacher Leader degree or endorsement is designed for teachers who have a professional education license and want to pursue additional leadership training and responsibilities. Educators who earn a Teacher Leader degree or endorsement may pursue positions as a mentor or coach, lead curriculum standards committees, serve as department or grade-level chairs, lead school improvement initiatives and serve on school leadership teams.

The Class of 2013 is off to Yale University, Princeton Theological Seminary, Mayo Graduate School, the Peace Corps, Teach For America, area school districts and corporations like Allstate, Northern Trust and OfficeMax. Many shared some very profound feelings on Commencement Day by creating unique messages for their mortarboards.

Robert Moussetis, North Central College professor of international programs, chair of the management and marketing department and coordinator of graduate business programs, was invited to contribute an essay to Volume One of the 2013 “Encyclopedia of Management Theory,” edited by Eric H. Kessller.

Gregory Wolf, North Central College Dennis and Jean Bauman Professor in the Humanities and professor of German, authored a 26-page essay, titled “The Desire to Control Death: Heinrich von Kleist’s Epistolary Correspondence on Schicksal, Tod and Selbstmord,” which was published in the 2013 book “Wenn sie das Wort Ich gebraucht.” Festschrift für Barbara Becker- Cantarino von FreundInnen, SchülerInnen und KollegInnen,” with editors John Pustejovsky and Jacqueline Vansant.
