Jan. 5, 2011—Mixed media creations by artist Nancy Legner will be exhibited Feb. 9 through March 31 in North Central College’s Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St., Naperville.
The exhibit “Whimsical Chapters of a Secret World” is free and open to the public. The artist will greet visitors during an opening reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13. Complimentary refreshments will be served.
Legner’s mixed media and acrylic paintings are carefully articulated whimsical fantasies that communicate highly personal narrative themes. Combining these charming vintage qualities with a bizarre surrealistic twist, Legner’s works remind one of a juicy romance novel or a playful children's story.
“Influenced by a long-ago secret world of objects, creatures and places, the paintings have a vintage ambience,” Legner says. “With an understanding of the Victorian period, the canvasses are rendered in a ritual process being full of a busy abundance. The compositions explode with color and movement ... being outrageous, humorous, playful or absurd.”
Legner, an Evanston native who now lives in Sandwich, Ill., is a full-time artist who previously taught art education in Batavia School District 101. She holds master of arts and master of fine arts degrees from Northern Illinois University and a bachelor of fine arts from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo.
She was honored as the Illinois Art Education Associations’ Elementary Art Educator of the Year for 2006-2007. Legner’s exhibitions frequently have been in the Chelsea and Greenwich Village art districts of New York City as well as colleges, universities and galleries throughout the United States.
