Canadian Brass returns to North Central College April 14 for two performances featuring selections from its new album, “Canadian Brass Takes Flight.”
The quintet will perform two concerts at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, April 14, in Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. Tickets are $55 and $45; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix.
Since its founding in 1970 in Toronto, Canadian Brass has become an international phenomenon, recording more than 90 albums and selling out venues around the world. The musicians have a special affinity for Baroque music and have recorded works by Purcell, Vivaldi and Bach, but have also expanded their repertoire to include Latin, jazz, swing, ragtime and even American patriotic songs.
The ensemble has performed in virtually every major concert hall in the world and has sold more than two million albums worldwide. It has expanded and energized the brass repertoire by transcribing, arranging and commissioning more than 200 works, including critically acclaimed compositions from Michael Kamen, Luther Henderson, Bramwell Tovey, Don Gillis and more.
Canadian Brass truly takes flight with its new album, featuring favorite encores, new arrangements and world premieres. It’s not only the first recording with all new permanent members of the ensemble—Eric Reed, Chris Coletti, Brandon Ridenour, Achilles Liarmakopoulos and co-founder Chuck Daellenbach—but it’s also the first recording they have made with their new custom-made Conn-Selmer instruments.
The new sound of these instruments is something that enlivens both music enthusiasts and Daellenbach alike. “This is the sound we all grew up with: the amazing brass tradition that started right here in America,” he noted. “That, together with a group of players who are international superstars, gave us the idea to record the 'hits that made the original group famous.’”
No matter what the style of presentation—from formal, classical concerts to compositions served up with lively dialogue and theatrical effects—the music is central and performed with utmost dedication and excellence. Visit canbrass.com for more information.
